When it comes to recovery convenience, passkeys win because they sync through your iCloud or Google account—even if you lose your device, you can get them back. Step 1: Understand the security model differences

The key difference between these two "locks" is where the private key is created and stored.

  • Hardware key (like YubiKey, Ledger): The private key is stored on a physical chip, never connected to the internet, never leaves the device. When logging in, it only signs a challenge from OKX locally. A phishing site with a wrong domain won't even get a signature request. The downside is that it's a physical item—you must carry it, and if lost or broken, you face a complex reset process.

  • Passkey: Based on FIDO2/WebAuthn, also phishing-resistant, but the private key is stored in your device's secure chip and synced across devices through cloud services (iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager). If your Apple or Google account is hacked, the synced passkeys could be exposed.

Step 2: Choose the main option based on your use case

There's no perfect choice—only what fits your habits best.

  • Case A: Large assets, infrequent actions — just go with a hardware key. OKX allows you to set a hardware key as two-factor authentication (2FA) or even as the only login method. When binding, you need to insert the physical key and touch to confirm. The benefit is that it resists cloud hacking and remote attacks. The downside is you must plug and unplug the key each time you log in.

  • Case B: Frequent trading, switching between multiple devices — choose a passkey. After binding, you can verify with Face ID, fingerprint, or screen lock. Devices under the same iCloud or Google account sync automatically. If you switch between different phones and computers, this convenience is unbeatable.

Step 3: Consider the recovery path after loss

This is the most crucial difference that many overlook.

  • Hardware key lost: If you only have one hardware key and no backup method, you'll need to contact customer support to reset. This usually requires a video identity verification and may trigger a 24-hour withdrawal hold. If you have already bound a second backup hardware key (OKX supports up to 5), you won't be affected.

  • Passkey lost: If you lose a single device, as long as your iCloud or Google account is safe, you can restore sync on another device logged into the same cloud account. In extreme cases, if your device passcode is cracked and the phone is stolen, an attacker could use passkey to log in directly.

Common misconceptions

Many people mistakenly think "passkey = hardware key". Some guides mix up "USB security key" and "passkey", making it seem like a USB stick and biometrics are the same thing. No matter which you choose, once you enable the policy "Only allow hardware key login", SMS codes and TOTP (Google Authenticator) will be permanently disabled and cannot be recovered. How to verify the setup

When binding, OKX will ask you to verify your email, phone, and 2FA. After binding, try logging in on another device using Chrome or Safari and check if you can pass the key verification. If not, it means something (like browser permissions or drivers) wasn't set up correctly during binding.
