Binance.US Deposit Returned: How to Settle a Negative Balance?

Binance.US negative balance is not a "penalty bill." It means a deposit you made earlier was returned by your bank, and the platform had already credited that money to your account in advance. Now you need to pay it back. There is only one core action to settle it: use a successfully cleared deposit to bring the negative balance back to zero or positive. Until then, your account's withdrawal, trading, and even deposit functions may be restricted. The platform may also sell assets in your account within a short time to cover the debt.

How a negative balance happens

Binance.US ACH deposits have one special feature: to let you trade immediately, the platform "pre-credits" the amount to your account before the bank confirms the transfer. If the bank later fails to send the money to Binance.US because of insufficient funds, a closed account, a user-initiated payment cancellation, or an unsupported account type (such as a savings account or brokerage account), the pre-credited amount will turn negative on your balance.

Common triggers include: not having enough money in your bank account when you started the deposit; the bank blocking or reversing the transaction; using a non-personal checking account; or you contacted your bank to cancel a payment. Also, if your bank statement shows a "pending" charge, that does not always mean the deposit succeeded. Pending status can last one to five business days and will disappear on its own if the transfer fails.

First, confirm two things: how much is the negative balance, and how restricted is your account

After logging in to Binance.US, you can see the negative amount directly on the balance page. The platform will also send you an email notice. At the same time, check whether your account shows messages about paused withdrawals, restricted trading, or rejected deposits. These are usually chain reactions caused by an unsettled negative balance.

One thing to keep clear: this negative balance is a Binance.US issue. It is not the same as the negative balance mechanism in Binance International's Unified Account. The international version involves auto-deleveraging, conversion repayment, and other rules that do not apply to this deposit-return situation. Do not mix up the solutions.

Three ways to settle a negative balance — choose based on your situation

Option 1: Deposit funds again to cover it (most direct)

If the negative balance happened because your bank temporarily lacked funds or the transaction was blocked by mistake, and you plan to keep using this account, making a successful deposit is the fastest fix. The official guidance clearly says "Deposit USDT or USD equivalent to settle the balance." Note: the system will not automatically take money from your other crypto assets to cover the negative balance. You must first convert assets to USD or directly deposit USD/USDT to fill the gap.

There is one easy trap before depositing: Binance.US requires your bank account to have at least 130% of the deposit amount in available balance when you start an ACH deposit. For example, if you want to deposit $100, your bank account needs at least $130 available. This is to cover possible overdrafts or pending transactions. Also, if you have had an uncleared deposit in the past three days, you may see an "insufficient funds" message. In that case, wait a bit or try a smaller amount first.

Option 2: Sell or convert assets already in your account

If you do not want to or cannot deposit from your bank, you can sell or convert crypto already in your account into USD to cover the negative balance. The official guidance mentions using the Convert feature (shown as zero fee but includes spread) or selling assets through the "Buy or Sell" menu. The key point here is: you must convert to USD first. The system will not directly take BTC or other coins to offset the negative amount. After the conversion is done, the USD balance will cancel out the negative value.

Option 3: When you already have a dispute with your bank

If you contacted your bank to reverse a payment because you disputed a transaction, and that caused the negative balance on Binance.US, the platform may ask you to submit your most recent bank statement. Sometimes they may even require a video verification while holding your ID. After you submit the documents, the review usually takes 24 to 72 hours. Your deposit function will only be restored after approval. This path is slower than the first two, but if your dispute with the bank is still unresolved, simply depositing again could cause the same money to be deducted twice. Going through document review first is safer.

What happens if you do nothing, and when to worry

The official Binance.US help page is very direct: a negative balance may trigger asset liquidation in your account in as little as 48 hours, and it may also be sent to a collection agency. This is not a scare tactic. It is written into the rules as a time window. If you still have coins in your account and do not plan to pay, the platform has the right to sell your holdings to cover the debt.

A common mistake is seeing a charge on your bank statement and thinking the negative balance should not exist. A pending charge and an actual cleared transfer are not the same thing. If the bank ultimately does not send the money, the pending record will disappear, but the negative balance on Binance.US will remain. What you should check is the transaction history and balance page on Binance.US, not the pending list in your bank app.

Also, after settling the negative balance, account functions may not be restored instantly. The official guidance says the account will be "fully re-enabled" after the negative balance is cleared, but in reality you should check the withdrawal and trading status you see after logging in. If your account is still restricted after clearing the balance, check whether there is any unfinished document review or contact customer support.
