Buying GRT on OKX means you hold an asset, but you cannot directly use it to query data on The Graph network. To use GRT to pay for queries, you first need to withdraw it from OKX to a wallet on the Arbitrum network, then deposit it into your Billing Balance in Subgraph Studio. There is one hard requirement that is easy to overlook: The Graph billing system only accepts GRT on Arbitrum.

Why GRT bought on OKX cannot be used directly for queries
The Graph is a decentralized data indexing protocol. When developers query Subgraph data, they need to pay query fees to Indexers on the network, and this payment happens on-chain, specifically, the billing contract runs on Arbitrum One.
OKX is a centralized exchange. The GRT in your account is an internal ledger balance on the exchange. It is not in your on-chain wallet, and it is not on the Arbitrum network. To use it for query fees, you must first withdraw it to a wallet address that you control on the Arbitrum network.
One detail here: OKX supports GRT withdrawals, but you need to confirm which network you choose when withdrawing. The Graph billing system only recognizes GRT on Arbitrum. If you withdraw GRT to the Ethereum mainnet or another network, you will need an extra cross-chain bridge step before it can be used for billing.
The full path from OKX to usable GRT
Step 1: Withdraw GRT from OKX to an Arbitrum wallet. On the OKX withdrawal page, select GRT, choose Arbitrum One as the network, and enter your wallet address, such as MetaMask or Rabby. After the withdrawal arrives, you need to manually add the GRT token in your wallet. The GRT contract address on Arbitrum is 0x9623063377AD1B27544C965cCd7342f7EA7e88C7.
Step 2: Prepare a small amount of ETH on Arbitrum. Depositing into Billing Balance and later withdrawal operations all require gas fees. Gas is paid in ETH, not GRT. You need to make sure your wallet has a small amount of Arbitrum ETH.
Step 3: Deposit in Subgraph Studio. Go to the Billing page in Subgraph Studio, connect your wallet, and select "Deposit from wallet". Enter the amount of GRT you want to deposit and confirm the transaction. GRT deposited from Arbitrum usually arrives within seconds to minutes.
After the deposit is complete, you can create an API Key and use it to query Subgraph data. Query fees will be deducted from your Billing Balance.
Billing model: you pay for queries, not for indexing
The Graph economic model clearly separates query costs from indexing costs:
Query costs are the fees you pay as a data consumer, billed per query. Fees are priced in USD but paid in GRT. For reference, The Graph official documentation gives an average query cost of about $20 per million queries, or about $0.00002 per query.
Indexing costs are the costs of getting a Subgraph indexed and kept up to date. These are incentivized by indexing rewards and curator signals in the network, and you are not charged per query for them. This means you cannot make an unindexed Subgraph immediately queryable by simply paying more.
The free tier in Subgraph Studio is 100,000 queries per month. Beyond that, usage is billed.
Common places where people get stuck
Choosing the wrong withdrawal network. If you select ERC-20 (Ethereum mainnet) when withdrawing from OKX, your GRT will arrive at your Ethereum address. You can move it to Arbitrum using The Graph's official bridge tool or the one-click bridge feature in Subgraph Studio, but this adds an extra step and extra gas costs.
No Arbitrum ETH in your wallet. This is the most common reason people get stuck. The Billing Balance deposit transaction will fail because there is not enough gas. You need to withdraw a small amount of ETH from OKX or elsewhere to the Arbitrum network.
GRT delegation and query payment are two different things. If you only want to query data, depositing GRT into your Billing Balance is enough. Delegation is a separate action aimed at earning rewards and has no direct relationship to paying query fees.
