On OKX, there is essentially only one option for "directly holding gold": XAUT spot. The "gold contract" you mentioned needs clarification first — in January 2026, OKX renamed the XAUTUSDT perpetual contract to XAUUSDT perpetual contract. It now tracks the XAU/USDT index and no longer belongs to the same risk unit as XAUT spot. Additionally, OKX launched the XAU event contract in June 2026, which is a completely different product. If you want to "buy gold like buying gold," XAUT spot is your only choice. If you want to bet on gold prices, you need to understand the difference between perpetual contracts and event contracts first.

XAUT Spot: What You Are Actually Buying
XAUT (Tether Gold) — each token represents one troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold bar, stored in Swiss vaults. Buying XAUT on the OKX spot market means holding ownership certificates for that physical gold, which you can sell anytime on OKX's spot market for USDT.
Its advantages are 24/7 trading, divisibility, and no management fees. Its limitations are that liquidity is far lower than BTC or ETH, and large market orders may cause significant slippage — limit orders are recommended. Also, redeeming physical gold typically requires about 430 XAUT (roughly one standard gold bar) and involves KYC and custodian procedures, making it unsuitable for small holders.
XAU Perpetual Contract: What Changed After the Renaming
In late 2025, OKX announced the renaming of the XAUTUSDT perpetual contract to XAUUSDT perpetual contract, completed on January 15, 2026. There are three key changes:
Risk unit separation. The renamed XAUUSDT perpetual contract no longer belongs to the same risk unit as XAUT spot. If you hold both under portfolio margin mode, your required margin may increase after the rename, requiring you to add margin or adjust positions proactively.
Index component adjustment. The XAUUSDT perpetual contract now references the XAU/USDT index for funding rates, price limits, and mark prices. During normal hours, this index includes OKX_TradFi's XAU/USD quote (20% weight) and XAUT/PAXG trading pairs from multiple exchanges. During spot gold market closed hours, OKX_TradFi's weight drops to 0%, while other exchanges' weights each rise to 25%.
Funding rate volatility. Gold TradFi markets have fixed trading hours and holidays. During closed periods, index component changes may cause increased funding rate volatility.
XAU Event Contract: A Completely Different Product
In June 2026, OKX launched the XAU event contract, marking the first time the event contract product line introduced a precious metals underlying. It is not a contract for buying or selling gold prices, but rather a product for predicting whether gold prices will meet a certain condition, such as "XAU daily price above a certain threshold."
Its settlement logic is: every day at 5:00 PM ET, the arithmetic average of OKX's XAU-USDT index prices per second during the 60 seconds before settlement is taken as the settlement price. If the expiry date falls on a non-trading day for the gold market, the contract will not be listed. If the underlying market experiences an unscheduled closure or early close, OKX will initiate a manual settlement process.
Event contracts have fixed expiry times and do not support early settlement. Your profit or loss depends on whether the condition is met at settlement. This is completely different from buying XAUT and holding it long-term.
How to Choose: Based on Your Actual Needs
If you want to tie part of your crypto account funds to gold prices and may hold long-term, XAUT spot is the direct choice. No expiry date, no funding rate — what you hold is a gold ownership certificate.
If you want to use leverage to amplify directional bets on gold prices, the XAUUSDT perpetual contract is the tool, but pay attention to funding rates and margin requirements, as well as the fact that the index it now tracks may deviate from XAUT spot prices in the short term.
If you simply want to bet on a specific gold price condition (like "tomorrow's gold price will be above a certain level"), the XAU event contract is the corresponding product. It is not suitable for "holding gold."
