Before Pausing OKX Futures Trading, Handle Your Positions and Protection Orders First

On OKX, "pausing futures trading" can mean two different things, and the way you handle each is completely different. If you mean turning on the futures cool-off period, once it is activated it cannot be ended early, but you can still close existing positions normally. Whether your protection orders (stop-loss and take-profit) are kept depends on what you confirm before turning it on. If you mean the platform pausing trading for a specific contract (system upgrade, contract delisting, corporate actions, etc.), during the pause you usually cannot place orders, cancel orders, or add margin. Protection orders may be cancelled when trading is paused, leaving your positions exposed without protection. First figure out which situation you are facing, then act.

If you are turning on the cool-off period yourself: first check whether protection orders are still there

OKX's futures cool-off period is a voluntary restriction feature. Once activated, it cannot be ended early, and customer support cannot end it early either. During the cool-off period, you can reduce positions, close positions, adjust margin and leverage, but you cannot add to positions or open new ones.

The problem lies with protection orders. The official help page clearly states that "strategy orders and copy trading orders" will be rejected during the cool-off period regardless of whether they open or close positions, but it does not clearly state whether stop-loss and take-profit orders are considered strategy orders that will be blocked. Some third-party analyses point out that you should neither assume they will definitely become invalid nor assume they will definitely be unaffected. This means before turning on the cool-off period, you need to go to the "Current Orders" list and check what type of stop-loss and take-profit orders you have placed. After turning it on, confirm again whether they are still there. If they are classified as strategy orders and blocked, your positions will have no automatic protection during the cool-off period, and you will have to rely on manual monitoring or close positions early.

After the cool-off period is activated, it takes about 30 seconds at most to take effect. The duration is selected in days (1, 3, 7, 14, 30 days), and it is irreversible. If you just do not want to open new positions temporarily but want protection orders to keep working, a safer approach is not to turn on the cool-off period, but to manually stop placing new orders and keep your stop-loss and take-profit orders in place.

If the platform pauses futures trading: protection orders will likely be processed

OKX has paused specific futures trading multiple times in history. The functional restrictions during the pause are clear: you cannot place orders, cancel orders, modify orders, add margin, or transfer funds. The fate of protection orders differs depending on the scenario.

Contract rename or brief pause (such as XAUTUSDT rename). The official announcement states: trading is paused during the rename, pending orders will be kept, and position quantity and average open price remain unchanged. However, stop-loss and take-profit orders will be cancelled after trading stops. If you placed a stop-loss protection before the pause, it disappears at the moment of the pause. Strategy trading and strategy orders (including trailing stop-loss, take-profit, planned orders, etc.) will be shut down and cancelled about four hours before the rename.

Contract delisting. After trading is paused, all pending orders are cancelled, and positions are force-settled at the average index price from a period before delisting. Strategy trading bots will be gradually shut down within one hour before delisting. Protection orders will not protect you from anything because the positions themselves will be closed by the system.

System upgrade or maintenance. During the pause, you cannot cancel or place orders, and you cannot add margin either. If you have positions and protection orders were not cancelled before the pause, they are theoretically still "waiting to trigger" during this period, but whether they can execute after triggering depends on whether the system has recovered. Upgrade announcements usually recommend that users add margin in advance, lower leverage, or close positions to control risk.

What you should do now

First confirm which situation you are facing. Open OKX's announcement page or in-app notifications and check whether there is a pause announcement for the contract you hold. If there is, the announcement will state the pause time window and the affected functions.

If it is a platform pause: before the pause begins, decide whether to keep or close your positions. If you do not want to bear the risk of being unable to operate during the pause, close your positions manually before the pause. If you want to keep holding, confirm that your margin ratio is sufficient to withstand potential volatility during the pause, and do not count on protection orders—the announcement already states that stop-loss and take-profit orders may be cancelled. During the pause, you cannot cancel or modify orders. What you can do is wait for recovery and then immediately check your position status and order list.

If you want to turn on the cool-off period yourself: first open the stop-loss and take-profit list under "Current Orders" and take a screenshot or note down which orders you have placed. After turning on the cool-off period, go back to the same list and confirm whether those orders are still there. If they have been cleared, you have two choices: accept that your positions temporarily have no automatic protection, or manually close part of your positions first to reduce risk. The cool-off period cannot be reversed once activated, so this check must be done before turning it on.

In either case, do not repeatedly try to place or cancel orders during the pause. The system will reject them. Repeated attempts will not speed up recovery or change the status of protection orders. The first thing to do after recovery is to check your positions and orders: whether positions are still there, whether the margin ratio is healthy, and whether protection orders need to be placed again. If the contract has been delisted and settled, check the settlement records and fund transfer status in your account history.
