You may still have floating profit on your futures position, but notice the "Maintenance Margin Rate" on your account page suddenly jumps up, which may make you panic that your risk is rising. In fact, the maintenance margin rate itself is not a risk control indicator, it is more like a threshold: this threshold will not make you lose money directly, but if the maintenance margin requirement for your held positions increases while the margin in your account does not rise accordingly, your relative risk will increase.

Step 1: Understand What the Rising Maintenance Margin Rate Actually Means

Maintenance Margin Rate (MMR) refers to the minimum margin ratio required to keep your current positions open. It is usually not determined by your account status, but by the following factors: the exchange's risk parameter adjustment (for different crypto assets or leverage multiples), or you manually adjusted the leverage multiple while holding positions. When this value rises, it means the minimum funds required to maintain your positions get higher. If your available margin cannot cover this new additional requirement, your account's actual risk exposure will indeed increase.

Step 2: Judge Your Current Real Risk Level

We recommend you distinguish your risk status based on the relationship between your account's current margin ratio and the new maintenance margin rate:

  • Scenario A: Your account margin ratio is still higher than the new maintenance margin rate, with sufficient safety buffer Under this scenario, the system usually will not trigger forced liquidation. Your current risk is controllable, no immediate operation is needed, but you still need to keep monitoring market movements.
  • Scenario B: Your account margin ratio is very close to or lower than the new maintenance margin rate This is a high-risk status, which means if you take no action, a small price fluctuation may trigger forced liquidation. You need to pay close attention to your positions if you plan to keep holding.
  • Scenario C: Your account margin ratio is already lower than the maintenance margin rate This scenario usually means forced liquidation has been triggered or you are under liquidation warning, you need to check your position status immediately.

Step 3: Take Targeted Actions Based on Your Risk Level

If you confirm you are in Scenario B or near the critical threshold, you can consider the following operations:

  • Add margin Transfer more funds to your futures account to lower the actual leverage multiple, this is a straightforward way to reduce risk.
  • Partial close or fully close your position If you do not want to add more funds, you can choose to close part or all of your positions to release margin pressure.
  • Check your leverage settings If you are using a relatively high leverage multiple, appropriately lowering the leverage can help you control risk.

Verification after operation: After making adjustments, check the "Margin Ratio" or "Risk Rate" on your futures account page, make sure it is higher than the current maintenance margin rate and stays in a relatively safe range (for example, higher than 150%). If this value keeps rising, it means your account risk status is improving.
