Why OKX Reduce-Only Orders Get Canceled by the System

The most common reason your reduce-only order is canceled by the system is that you simply have no corresponding position. When you place a reduce-only order without holding a position, the order will fail immediately. Additionally, if the position size is smaller than the order quantity, the system will automatically modify or cancel some of your orders based on your order price priority, ensuring that the total quantity of all close orders does not exceed your position.

Here are the specific reasons and self-check steps.

Prerequisites

  1. You have already selected the "Reduce-Only" option in OKX futures or perpetual trading.

  2. The canceled order is a limit order, market order, or advanced limit order.

  3. You can view your current positions and order history.

Step 1: Check whether you have a position in the corresponding direction

Reduce-only orders are only allowed to reduce existing positions. They cannot increase positions or open reverse positions.

Situation A: You have no position, or the position direction is opposite to the order direction

  • For example, you currently have no long position, but you place a reduce-only "sell to close long" order.

  • Result: The order fails to place and is directly rejected by the system.

  • Completion standard: Confirm whether you currently hold a position in the corresponding direction and whether the quantity is sufficient.

Situation B: You have a position and the order quantity is less than or equal to the position

  • The order can be successfully submitted and wait to be filled.

  • Completion standard: The order status is "open" or "partially filled".

Situation C: You have a position but the order quantity is larger than the position

  • For example, you hold 100 contracts long, but you place reduce-only sell orders totaling 120 contracts.

  • Result: The system will prioritize the orders based on execution priority and automatically cancel or modify some of them so that the total quantity of all close orders equals the position quantity.

  • Completion standard: The remaining order quantities are automatically modified by the system, not completely canceled.

Step 2: Check whether existing pending close orders cause a quantity conflict

When you already have pending close orders in your account and add a new reduce-only order, the system manages them in a unified way.

The system uses the following priority:

  • Buy orders: higher price = higher priority

  • Sell orders: lower price = higher priority

  • If prices are the same, earlier order time = higher priority

Example: You hold 100 contracts long and have two pending close orders:

  • Order A: price 17,000, 80 contracts

  • Order B: price 18,000, 20 contracts

Now you place a new reduce-only sell order: price 16,000, 50 contracts. The system determines: the new order price of 16,000 is better (lower), so it ranks higher.

  • The new 50-contract order succeeds

  • Order A (17,000) quantity is modified to 50 contracts

  • Order B (18,000) has a worse price and is directly canceled

Completion standard: You will see some orders modified or canceled, not all canceled.

Step 3: Check whether the order was rejected due to the "Cool-off Period"

OKX has a "Cool-off Period" feature in futures trading. Once you enter the cool-off period, non-reduce-only orders are rejected, but reduce-only orders are still allowed.

Situation A: You placed a reduce-only order but it was still rejected

  • This may be because the order type is restricted under the "open/close position" mode. In the open/close position mode, "close" orders are reduce-only by default, while "open" orders are non-reduce-only by default and cannot be manually set to reduce-only.

  • Completion standard: Check whether you are using "buy/sell mode" or "open/close position mode". The reduce-only function can only be manually selected by the user in buy/sell mode.

Situation B: You actually did not check the reduce-only option

  • The cool-off period only blocks non-reduce-only orders. If your order was rejected, check whether you ticked the reduce-only option.

Step 4: Check whether the order was restricted by position limit rules

OKX imposes limits on the total value of positions and pending orders for a single contract. If the limit is exceeded, new open orders are rejected. However, reduce-only orders are not affected by this restriction.

Conclusion: If your reduce-only order was rejected due to position limits, the system may have judged that the order would increase rather than decrease your position. Check whether the order direction is indeed a closing direction.

Common Reasons for Failure

The most easily overlooked reason: Using the "Open" button under the "Open/Close Position Mode"

In open/close position mode, the system divides orders into "open" and "close". If you select the "open" direction, that order defaults to non-reduce-only and cannot be manually set to reduce-only. At this point, if you want to place a reduce-only order but choose "open", the order will be rejected by the system. The correct approach is to operate under the "close" direction, or tick reduce-only in "buy/sell mode".

Risk Reminders

  • Reduce-only property of take-profit and stop-loss orders: Take-profit and stop-loss orders attached when opening a position are reduce-only orders by default; take-profit and stop-loss orders during closing are also reduce-only. If the position is insufficient when triggered, the order may not be fully filled or may be partially filled.

  • Position frozen during forced partial liquidation: If a forced partial liquidation is triggered, the user's position in that contract and direction will be frozen, and all related contract operations cannot be performed.

How to Confirm the Operation Is Complete

Go to [Current Orders] or [Order Management] to check the details of the canceled order.

  • If it shows "Canceled" and there is no position, it means it was rejected due to no position — open a position first and then place the reduce-only order.

  • If it shows "Canceled" with a note "Reduce-only quantity modified", it means the system adjusted the order quantity for you — no further action is needed; the system has automatically corrected it.

  • If the order status is "Filled" or "Open", it means the reduce-only order has been successfully submitted.
