How Manual Position Additions Are Calculated After OKX Copy Trading

After copy trading, if you manually add to a position, the additional portion is treated by the system as an "independent position" linked only to your own manual actions and no longer follows the lead trader. It will be executed using the parameters you manually set (leverage, margin mode), and the P&L is calculated separately — it will not be combined with the copy position for statistics.

The following explains the specific calculation logic for manually added positions under the two different copy trading modes.

Prerequisites

  1. You are already following a trader on OKX's copy trading system and have an existing copy position.

  2. You are planning to or have already manually added to a position for the same trading pair.

  3. You can view the copy position and the manual position separately on the Current Copy and Positions pages.

Step 1: Confirm Your Copy Trading Mode

OKX copy trading supports two modes: Fixed Margin mode and Proportional Copy mode.

Scenario A: Fixed Margin Mode

  • You invest a fixed amount per copy trade (e.g., 10 USDT). Every time the lead trader opens a position, the system automatically uses the same fixed amount for your copy trade.

  • Maximum copy amount = Amount per trade × Maximum number of orders that can be held simultaneously.

Scenario B: Proportional Copy Mode

  • You set a copy ratio (e.g., 0.1). Your copy amount per trade = Lead trader's position value × Your copy ratio.

  • The larger the lead trader's position, the larger your copy amount; the smaller the position, the smaller your copy amount.

Completion criterion: Go to the Copy Settings page and confirm which copy mode is currently in use.

Step 2: How the System Handles Manual Additions

Within the copy trading system, manually adding to a position does not affect the attribution or calculation logic of the copy position.

Independence of the copy position and the manual position:

  • The copy position is automatically opened by the system based on the lead trader's signals, and P&L is recorded independently on an order-by-order basis.

  • A manual addition is an order you place yourself on the trading interface. The system treats it as "independent trading outside the copy relationship" and will not include it in the mapping logic of the copy position.

Handling during close:

  • When the lead trader closes a position, the system closes your copy position proportionally based on the order ratio — for example, if the lead trader closes 50% of the lead order, your corresponding copy order will also be closed by 50%.

  • Your manual addition portion will not be affected by this operation — it will not be automatically closed when the lead trader closes their position. You need to close it manually yourself.

Completion criterion: In the Current Copy order list, you can distinguish which orders were automatically generated by the system as copy trades and which ones are manual orders placed by you.

Step 3: P&L Calculation for the Manually Added Position

The P&L of the manually added position is calculated independently from the copy position.

Separate P&L accounting:

  • The P&L of the copy position is tied to the entry price and exit price of the lead trader's order. In the case of partial fills, it is settled proportionally.

  • The P&L of the manually added position is calculated based on your own entry price and exit price, completely unrelated to the copy position.

Profit sharing:

  • Profit from the copy position is subject to the profit share ratio set by the lead trader (usually 10%), which is paid to the lead trader.

  • Profit from the manually added position does not require profit sharing — this is entirely your own independent operation.

Completion criterion: Go to the Positions page and check the position details. Confirm that the entry price of the manually added part is recorded separately from the entry price of the copy position.

Common Causes of Misunderstanding

Assuming "the copy ratio will automatically adjust after adding to a position"

Many users mistakenly think that after manually adding to a position, the system will incorporate the newly added part into the copy trading scope, and that all subsequent new trades by the lead trader will be calculated based on the "updated total position". In reality, manually adding to a position only affects your current existing position and does not change the calculation logic for future copy amounts. Subsequent copy trades will still be executed according to the fixed amount or fixed ratio you originally set. If you want to change the copy amount, you need to modify the parameters in the Copy Settings — not by manually adding to a position.

Risk Reminders

  • Risk of inconsistent direction: If the direction of your manual addition differs from the copy position (e.g., copy trade is long but you manually short), you are effectively hedging with two opposing strategies. The system will not automatically hedge or alert you.

  • Differences in leverage and margin mode: When you manually add to a position, your leverage and margin mode are set by you and may differ from the copy trade settings. If not double-checked, the same trading pair could end up with two different risk control logics.

  • Manual addition may trigger "maximum copy amount exceeded": If your manual addition pushes the total position value of that trading pair close to or above the "maximum copy amount" limit set in your copy settings, subsequent copy trades may fail because of this.

How to Confirm the Operation Is Complete

Go to the Current Copy page and check the copy details for that trading pair:

  • If only the order records generated by the lead trader are displayed, and your manual addition appears only on the Positions page but not in the Current Copy list, it means the manual addition has been successfully "decoupled" from the copy trade.

  • Confirm that the total position quantity of the pair on the Positions page = copy order quantity + manual addition quantity.

When closing, if you only want to close the copy position, do it from the Current Copy page; if you want to close the manual addition, do it from the Positions page. The two do not affect each other.
