Pausing Binance Futures Trading: What Can the Cooling-Off Period Restrict?

Once the cooling-off period is enabled, it cannot be lifted early—you can only wait for it to expire. You can still hold positions and place reduce-only orders to close or stop-loss, but all regular new positions, adding to positions, and strategy tools like futures grid and TWAP/VP will be locked. If your goal is to "stop yourself from opening orders impulsively," this feature works. If you expect it to "automatically close risky positions for you," it won't.

What the cooling-off period locks

The Binance Futures cooling-off period is a self-service tool designed to actively cut off your ability to keep placing orders after emotional trading or consecutive losses. Once enabled, the restrictions cover all Binance platforms under your account, including the web, App, and API.

Specifically disabled features include: USDⓈ-M Futures, COIN-M Futures, Futures Grid, TWAP (Time-Weighted Average Price), and VP (Volume Participation). This means you can neither manually open new positions nor launch new grid bots or algorithmic orders.

What you can do: close positions. During the cooling-off period, you are allowed to place reduce-only orders, and strategy orders are also limited to reduce-only types. If you hold open positions and are worried about risk, you can manually close them with reduce-only orders, or place a reduce-only stop-loss/take-profit order. But regular new positions, adding to positions, and reverse opening are all prohibited.

One thing you must handle before enabling

If you have any unfilled pending orders, the cooling-off period cannot be enabled. The system will block you from turning on this feature while pending orders exist. So the order of operations is: first go to "Open Orders" in Futures and cancel all pending orders, confirm there are no unfilled orders, and then go into settings to enable the cooling-off period.

Holding positions themselves does not prevent enabling. You can turn on the cooling-off period while holding futures positions, as long as there are no pending orders.

Futures Grid users should pay special attention

The cooling-off period has a more complex impact on grid trading than on manual trading. If you already have a running futures grid, after enabling the cooling-off period, all unfilled grid orders will be canceled within 48 hours. But whether the grid position is retained depends on whether you have enabled the "Continuous Profit Strategy" (CPS) option. The official explanation states: if you have not enabled CPS, your current position will remain valid. The specific behavior of CPS involves the internal logic of the grid product, and the official help page does not explain its full mechanism, so this part cannot be judged with certainty. The safe approach is: before enabling the cooling-off period, manually stop the grid, handle the position, and then enable it, to avoid leaving the grid in an uncertain state.

Duration options and actual impact

The cooling-off period can be set to one day, one week, one month, or indefinite, with the default being one day. "One day" does not mean "automatically lifted after 24 hours," but rather from the time of enabling until 23:59:59 local time on that same day. If you enable a one-day cooling-off period at 11 PM, it will last less than an hour. One week and one month work the same way, ending at 23:59:59 local time on the corresponding end date. The indefinite mode will show an end time on the trading page, but the official documentation does not specify the exact rule.

Once enabled, it cannot be lifted early. You can modify the duration, but you cannot cancel the cooling-off period to make it invalid immediately. So choosing "indefinite" requires extra caution, unless you truly intend to stop futures trading for a long time.

Another "cooling-off period" that is easy to confuse

The Binance Futures copy trading platform has a separate system-triggered cooling-off period, which is not the same as the self-service cooling-off period enabled by users themselves. If a lead trader project simultaneously meets AUM ≥ 500,000 USDT and a 7-day maximum drawdown ≥ 20%, the system will disable its trading function for 24 hours. After the rule adjustment in November 2024, this system cooling-off period no longer cancels open orders or closes positions—it only disables the trading function. If you are a lead trader whose cooling-off period was triggered by the copy trading system, your positions and pending orders are not affected by this cooling-off period, but you cannot make new lead trades within 24 hours.

Your action path

If your goal is to actively pause futures trading: first cancel all futures pending orders → go to settings in the futures trading interface → find the cooling-off period → choose the duration → confirm and enable. After enabling, use reduce-only orders to manage the risk of existing positions.

If you are already in the cooling-off period and want to close positions but are unsure how to operate: in the futures order panel, set the order type to reduce-only, then place an order in the closing direction. If even reduce-only orders are restricted, it means what you are experiencing is not the self-service cooling-off period, but other trading restrictions at the account level. You need to check the Binance App notifications or email for the specific reason.
