It depends. For the vast majority of regular participants, rewards not covering trading fees is the norm. Only when you rank high enough, or happen to catch an event with a large prize pool and few participants, can rewards potentially cover your costs. Binance spot trading competition prize pools typically follow a "top winners take most, the rest split the leftovers" structure, while trading fees are deducted based on your actual trading volume. Chasing rewards by inflating your volume will most likely just mean contributing fees to the platform.

How the Prize Pool Is Split Determines Most People Get Very Little
Take the Spot Trading Volume Tournament Season 8, ongoing in October 2026, as an example. The trading pairs are PEPE/USDC and AI/USDT, with a prize pool of 400 BNB and a minimum requirement of $500 equivalent trading volume.
Looking at the main prize structure: 1st place gets 12 BNB, 2nd place 10 BNB, 3rd place 8 BNB, 4th place 6 BNB, 5th place 4 BNB. Ranks 6 to 20 split 40 BNB, ranks 21 to 50 split 64 BNB, ranks 51 to 200 split 56 BNB, and ranks 201 to 1000 split 56 BNB. All eligible participants ranked after 1000 share 80 BNB based on trading volume proportion, with a cap of 0.05 BNB per person.
What does this mean? If you cannot rank within the top 1000, the maximum reward you can receive is 0.05 BNB. Based on the rough price of BNB, this cap itself is not high. And to reach the $500 minimum trading volume, at the standard spot taker fee rate of 0.1% for regular users (without BNB fee deduction enabled), one buy plus one sell would cost about $1 in fees. If you rank after 1000 and your trading volume is not large, the reward you receive will likely be only a few hundredths of a BNB, which cannot cover the $1 trading fee.
Top-ranked traders usually have trading volumes in the tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Their absolute fee amounts are far higher than those of tail-end users, but they also receive much larger BNB rewards. This is a classic winner-takes-all structure: fees are a linear cost, while rewards are a function of your ranking.
An Easily Overlooked Rule: Zero-Fee Trading Volume Does Not Count
The rules of several Binance trading competitions clearly state: All trading volume that enjoys zero trading fees will not be counted in the final volume calculation. This rule directly blocks the path of "farming volume with zero-fee pairs, paying no fees while still getting rewards." If you deliberately trade zero-fee pairs to save on fees, that volume is invalid for the competition.
Additionally, trading fees and gas fees themselves are not counted toward volume calculations. The fees you pay will not help improve your ranking.
When Rewards Might Cover Your Trading Fees
There are two situations worth seriously considering before joining.
First: You are confident you can rank within the top 50 or even top 20. The absolute value of top-tier rewards is large enough. Ranks 6 to 20 split 40 BNB, averaging about 2.67 BNB per person; ranks 21 to 50 split 64 BNB, averaging about 2.13 BNB per person. Converted at BNB market price, these rewards could potentially cover the fees of a medium-volume trader. But the premise is that you can actually break into this range, which depends on the trading volume of other participants. You cannot know in advance how much your competitors will trade.
Second: The prize pool is large, the trading pair is less popular, and few people participate. Some events target only a single trading pair (such as PROVE/USDT), with a prize pool of 1.5 million PROVE. If participation is low and competition is not fierce, even a lower ranking might earn a relatively decent reward. However, less popular trading pairs usually have worse liquidity, and the bid-ask spread may eat into your already thin profits.
The Real Math: It Is Not Just About Fees
If you decide to join, fees are not your only cost. You need to buy and sell on the designated trading pairs, and these pairs (like PEPE/USDC, AI/USDT, PROVE/USDT) often have much wider bid-ask spreads and slippage than major pairs like BTC/USDT. Trading $500 in volume, spread losses plus fees could bring your actual wear and tear to over $2 to $3. The cap for tail-end rewards is 0.05 BNB. Whether that covers this wear and tear depends on BNB's current price, but the margin is not comfortable.
Community users have reported similar calculations: with 1000 USDT in trading volume, fees are about 0.75 USDT (after enabling BNB discount), and the minimum guaranteed reward is about 0.65 USDT. Without a rebate, it is a net loss. This data comes from third-party user sharing, not official statistics, but its magnitude is consistent with the conclusion derived from the official prize pool structure.
My Take
If your goal is purely to "earn rewards," I do not recommend inflating volume for trading competitions. The prize distribution mechanism determines that most participants receive rewards lower than their own fee expenses. The fees you pay are certain, while the rewards you receive are uncertain and most likely skewed toward the top.
If you are already trading these pairs and have genuine trading needs, signing up for the competition along the way is reasonable. Since you are paying fees anyway, getting a small share of rewards is a bonus. But do not add unnecessary trades just to "meet the threshold" or "chase a higher ranking."
If you just want to reduce trading costs, using BNB to offset fees is more direct than joining trading competitions. When enabled, spot trading fees get a 25% discount. This is guaranteed to take effect and does not depend on ranking or luck. Competition rewards are probabilistic; the BNB discount is deterministic. They do not conflict, but prioritize locking in the guaranteed savings first.
Before joining, do one thing: open the event page and clearly check the current trading pairs, prize pool structure, and the reward amount corresponding to your estimated ranking range. Subtract your estimated fees and spread costs from that amount. If the result is negative, do not participate.
