OKX Auto-Repay vs Manual Repay: Differences & Interest Comparison

The core difference between OKX auto-repay and manual repay lies in the trigger timing and the source of funds. Auto-repay is a mandatory debt repayment process that the system executes when you close a position, while manual repay means you actively choose when and how to repay. The interest calculation logic is completely identical for both methods – you will not be charged more or less interest simply because you used auto-repay or manual repay.

Understanding the repayment logic for different account modes helps you choose the right approach before interest accrues.

Step 1: Confirm Your Account Mode – It Determines How You Repay

OKX supports multiple account modes, and the repayment logic differs entirely depending on which mode you are using:

Case A: Contract Mode (Spot Margin, Futures Trading) – Auto-Repay is Mandatory

In Contract mode, whether you use Cross Margin or Isolated Margin, as long as you have borrowed funds, the system will automatically execute the repay operation when you close a position. The order is: interest is repaid first, then the principal liability.

What to do: After closing a position, go to the [Assets] section and check whether the liability for that coin has been cleared to zero. If the liability is gone, the auto-repay has been executed. If the liability remains, it means the proceeds from closing the position were not enough to cover the entire debt, and you will need to handle the remaining part manually.

Completion standard: You understand that in this mode, auto-repay upon closing is the default mechanism and no extra action is needed.

Case B: Multi-Currency Margin Mode – Liabilities Remain After Closing, Manual Repay Required

In Multi-Currency mode, liabilities do not disappear automatically after closing a position – interest will be added to the total liability, and you need to go to the spot market to manually buy the coin and repay the debt.

What to do: After closing, enter the [Assets] section to check the liability coin and amount. Click the [Repay] button under that coin to manually repay. If the available balance of that coin in your account is insufficient, the system will prompt you to sell other assets to repay.

Completion standard: Before switching trading modes, confirm that all liabilities have been cleared to zero (you cannot switch trading modes while you still have liabilities in Multi-Currency mode).

Case C: Spot Mode – Purely Manual Repay

In Spot Margin mode, liabilities from borrowing are not automatically repaid. You need to manually operate the repay function in the [Assets] section.

Completion standard: You confirm you are using Spot Margin mode and know where the Repay button is located.

Step 2: Understanding Interest Calculation – Interest is Identical for Both Repay Methods

OKX calculates interest on an hourly basis, at the top of each hour, regardless of the repayment method. Interest is accrued every hour on the hour, using 00:00 as the base reference, and is deducted once per hour.

Key rules:

  • The interest calculation cycle needs 10 minutes; new liabilities generated within that cycle will also be counted.

  • Example: If you borrow at 22:55, interest will only be recorded and deducted at 23:00. If you repay before 22:57, that borrow will not generate any interest.

  • Liabilities in Cross Margin and Isolated Margin are charged and deducted interest separately.

  • Interest is added directly to the total liability, increasing the amount you owe.

Completion standard: You are clear that interest is calculated exactly the same way regardless of whether you repay manually or automatically. If you want to save money, the key is to repay as quickly as possible before the next full hour after borrowing, not to worry about which repayment method you use.

Step 3: Comparing the Two Repay Methods

Comparison ItemAuto-Repay (triggered at close)Manual Repay
When it happensAutomatically executed when closing a positionYou actively initiate it
Applicable modesContract mode (Cross/Isolated margin)Spot mode, Multi-Currency mode
Repay orderInterest first, then principalInterest first, then principal (same system prompt)
FlexibilityLow (triggered upon closing, no choice)High (you choose the timing and coin)
Can you avoid interestNo (interest has already accrued by the time you close)Yes (repay before the full hour to avoid interest)

Common failure reason: Many people assume that "auto-repay will automatically clear all liabilities," but in Multi-Currency mode, liabilities remain on the books after closing, and interest continues to accumulate. If you don't actively buy back the coin to repay, you may end up in a situation where you've closed the position but still owe money. Also, if you choose "sell other assets to repay" during manual repayment, extra trading slippage and conversion losses may occur.

Verification After Repayment

After completing the repayment, go to the [Assets] section and confirm two things:

  1. Whether the "Liabilities" and "Interest" fields for the target coin have been cleared to zero;

  2. If the liability is not cleared, it means the funds were insufficient to cover the entire debt, and the remaining part will continue to accrue interest.

Next step: If you plan to save on interest through manual repay, remember that OKX calculates interest at the top of every hour. If you repay the borrowed amount before the next full hour, no interest is charged for that hour. It's a good idea to glance at the current time right when you borrow. If it is less than 10 minutes before the next full hour, you can wait until after the hour before taking further action (to avoid unnecessary interest during the interest calculation window), or you can repay as quickly as possible before the full hour hits.
