Before claiming a POAP, you need to understand one thing clearly: POAP itself is an "attendance proof," not a "reward". It records that you participated in a specific event, similar to an on-chain souvenir ticket stub, and by default carries no economic value. If you see a "reward," that reward is set up separately by the event organizer and requires meeting additional conditions. A POAP badge itself does not guarantee you will receive anything.

What POAP Is and Is Not
POAP stands for Proof of Attendance Protocol. Its official definition is an on-chain keepsake that "turns precious moments into collectibles." Each POAP is an ERC-721 token with a unique number, minted on-chain, recording that you participated in a specific event. It is like a concert ticket stub or a conference badge. Its core value is commemorative, not financial.
It is especially important to note that the POAP project has stopped development. According to multiple sources, POAP entered maintenance mode on March 16, 2026, and no longer issues new badges. Previously minted badges remain on-chain and can be viewed and displayed, but the act of "issuing new POAPs for new events" no longer happens. If you are looking at a claim page for an old event, it may be an existing distribution still within its valid window. If you see "new event giving away POAP," you need to first verify whether that statement is still true.
Where Is the Boundary Between Proof and Reward?
The proof part: You complete the event requirements, such as attending, scanning a code, entering a password, or submitting an address, and receive an on-chain badge. This badge proves that "you participated." Claiming the proof itself usually does not require you to pay a fee, but you may need an Ethereum-compatible wallet address to receive it. If you do not have a wallet, you can reserve one with an email, but reserving is not the same as minting on-chain. You will still need to bind a wallet later to complete the process.
The reward part: Some event organizers use POAP as a qualification condition for raffles, whitelists, or future benefits. For example, "people who hold this POAP can enter a raffle" or "users who own a certain series of POAPs will qualify for an airdrop." This is an additional rule set by the organizer outside of POAP itself, not a function of the POAP protocol. POAP's official raffle tool, POAP Fun, also clearly states that the platform only provides the raffle mechanism and is not responsible for prize distribution. Whether and how prizes are delivered depends on the organizer.
A concrete example can help illustrate this difference: imToken once issued a Security Officer POAP, and all participating security officers could claim this badge. The claiming method was to open a specified link, enter the Ethereum address filled in the event form, and click query to claim. Here, "claiming the badge" is certain, but if you expect the badge to be exchanged for tokens or physical items, you need to check whether imToken had a separate announcement at that time. The badge itself does not promise these things.
What to Check Before Claiming
If you see an event saying "claim a POAP and get rewards," confirm three things in order:
Whether the event is still in its distribution period. The POAP protocol has stopped new issuances. Check whether the event announcement date and claiming link you see are still valid. A 2025 event link is very likely invalid in 2026.
Whether the reward rules are clearly written by the organizer. What the reward is, how much it is, the distribution time, and what form it will be delivered in, such as on-chain transfer, email contact, or raffle, must all come from the organizer's official announcement. A POAP badge appearing in your wallet does not mean the reward will automatically arrive.
Whether the claiming link is from an official channel. POAP claiming links are usually QR codes, short links, or passwords. Phishing pages imitate event claim pages and trick you into connecting your wallet or signing. Only get links from the event organizer's official announcements or official social media. Do not click links on third-party aggregator pages or in private messages. Claiming a POAP usually only requires you to provide an address or connect a wallet to mint. It does not require entering a private key or seed phrase. Close any page that asks for your private key, seed phrase, or signature on an unclear transaction.
A Follow-up Status Worth Noting
When claiming a POAP, if your address is not on the event whitelist, you may see "not eligible" or no results. In this case, contact the event organizer, not the POAP protocol team. POAP Inc. only provides minting infrastructure. Eligibility determination and distribution lists are decided by the organizer.
Also, after POAP stopped development, previously minted badges remain on-chain. You can view them through the POAP app or a block explorer. But if you expect an event that says "hold a POAP to receive rewards" to still be valid after March 2026, it is best to first confirm with the organizer whether the event is still ongoing before taking any action.
