Bitcoin Address Types Compared: Fees, Compatibility, and How to Choose

When choosing an address type in 2026, the most practical approach is this: for everyday receiving and transfers, use a native SegWit address starting with bc1q. Compatibility is good enough now, and fees are much lower than with legacy addresses. Only use a Taproot address starting with bc1p when you have confirmed the other side explicitly supports it. Unless you are sending to an old wallet or an exchange that only recognizes the legacy format, there is no reason to generate a new address starting with 1.

Four Address Types at a Glance

You can tell the address type by its prefix. That is the quickest way to identify it.

PrefixTypeEncodingApproximate Fee LevelCompatibility
1P2PKH (Legacy)Base58HighestAll wallets and exchanges
3P2SH (Nested SegWit/Multisig)Base58MediumAlmost all wallets and exchanges
bc1qP2WPKH (Native SegWit)Bech32LowMainstream wallets and exchanges
bc1pP2TR (Taproot)Bech32mLowest for single-sig; bigger advantage in complex transactionsNewer wallets; some exchanges still do not support withdrawals

The fee difference comes from transaction size, not from the fee rate itself. For the same single-signature transfer, a Legacy address takes up about 192 vbytes, while native SegWit takes about 141 vbytes, about 26% smaller. At the same fee rate, the transaction fee drops by roughly that proportion. A Taproot single-sig transaction is even smaller, but its main advantage is in complex script scenarios. Multisig or conditional spending looks the same as an ordinary single-sig transaction on-chain, which gives better privacy and lower fees.

Compatibility: The Real Situation in 2026

Compatibility problems with bc1q have basically disappeared. Mainstream wallets, including hardware wallets and mobile wallets, and the vast majority of active exchanges support sending to and withdrawing from this format. If you only use one address format, this is the one least likely to cause problems.

bc1p is more complicated. Most modern wallets support Taproot, but some exchanges still do not support withdrawals to Taproot addresses. The German exchange BSDEX clearly states on its support page that bc1p addresses can be used for deposits but not for withdrawals. This means if you want to withdraw BTC from an exchange to your own bc1p address, first check whether the exchange's withdrawal page accepts this format. If it does not, you will need a bc1q or 1-prefixed address as an intermediate step.

The main use of 3-prefixed addresses today is for multisig wallets and deposit addresses at certain exchanges. In single-signature scenarios, it has no fee advantage. But if you use a multisig setup, such as 2-of-3, your wallet will usually generate either this format or a bc1q format address.

How to Choose: By Scenario

Everyday receiving, personal wallets, sending to friends: use bc1q. It works with almost everyone, fees are clearly lower than with 1-prefixed addresses, and the encoding has built-in error detection. If you mistype a character, your wallet will usually reject the address outright instead of sending the funds.

Withdrawing from an exchange to your own wallet: first check what the exchange supports. If the withdrawal page accepts bc1q, use it. If the exchange only recognizes 1 or 3, use that. If the exchange supports bc1p and your wallet also supports it, you can use it, but do a small test transaction first.

Business multisig or scenarios requiring complex spending conditions: look at what address your multisig setup generates. P2SH multisig, starting with 3, is the traditional option and has good compatibility. Native SegWit multisig, P2WSH starting with bc1q, has lower fees. Taproot multisig, bc1p, has the best privacy but requires all participants and custodians to support it.

Long-term storage where you only receive and do not spend: bc1q is enough. The address type does not affect the value or security of Bitcoin itself. BTC in different address types is completely equivalent. You do not need to use a specific format just to be safer.

A Common Misunderstanding

You cannot directly convert between different address types. A 1-prefixed address and a bc1q-prefixed address can be derived from the same seed phrase, but the funds are not on the same address. To move BTC from one address format to another, you need to make an on-chain transfer and pay a miner fee. So when choosing an address type, think about which one you will mainly use, rather than constantly moving funds back and forth between formats.

Definition of Done

It is not just about generating an address. It is about this: after you give the address to the other party or paste it into a withdrawal page, the other party or platform does not show a format error, and you confirm with a small test that the funds arrive and can be spent. If you are the receiver, give out a bc1q address and keep a 1-prefixed address as a backup for the rare payer that only recognizes the legacy format. If you are the payer, after pasting an address, first check whether your wallet shows a format warning. If there is a warning, stop and confirm what format the other party actually needs.
