The cost of picking the wrong network can be permanent loss of funds. 1. First, Understand the Essential Differences Between the Two Networks

What to do: Realize that Polygon PoS and Ethereum are two completely different networks; don't be misled by their similar-looking addresses.

How to do it:

Ethereum (ERC20) – Mainnet, the Most Secure but the Most Expensive

  • Ethereum mainnet (Layer 1): all transactions are settled directly on the Ethereum blockchain
  • High transaction fees – a typical USDC transfer costs $1–$5
  • Confirmation time around 12–15 seconds
  • Assets are standard ERC20 tokens

Polygon PoS (Polygon Network) – Sidechain, the Fastest and Cheapest

  • Strictly speaking, it's not an L2 Rollup but an independent sidechain
  • Has its own validator set, running via Proof-of-Stake consensus
  • Extremely low transaction fees, typically less than $0.01
  • Sub-second confirmation speed

When it's done: You have a clear mental positioning — Ethereum is "slow + expensive + ultimate security"; Polygon is "fast + cheap + sidechain security model".

2. Check Which Network Your Assets Are On: The Decisive Factor

What to do: Check which network your tokens are on in your wallet. This is the only hard rule for choosing the network.

How to do it:

  1. Open your external wallet (MetaMask, Trust Wallet, etc.) and check the currently connected network.
  2. In the wallet's asset list, check which network the corresponding token belongs to:
    • If on Ethereum mainnet: choose the Ethereum (ERC20) network
    • If on Polygon mainnet: choose the Polygon (PoS) network

Critical reminder: The same token (e.g., USDC, POL) exists on different networks, but they are not interoperable. Sending from Ethereum mainnet to Binance's Polygon address will result in the funds not arriving.
