Binance Borrowing Limit Insufficient? Check Assets and Liabilities

If your borrowing limit is not enough, look at two places in your "Margin Account": current margin level and total liabilities. Then confirm whether the coin you want to borrow is restricted by the platform. These three reasons usually cause the issue. Just check in order.

Step 1: Check Your Margin Level

Margin Level is the core risk indicator of your margin account. It decides how much you can borrow. For cross margin, the formula is: total account assets / (total liabilities + unpaid interest). The lower this number, the heavier your leverage is, and the less room you have to borrow.

  • What to do: On the [Margin Account] page, find the "Margin Level" field.

  • What to look for: If the margin level is already near 1 (or below about 1.2), your account is at higher risk, and the system will restrict new borrowing. You need to repay loans or add collateral to raise the level.

Step 2: Check if the Coin is Restricted from Borrowing

This is a common trap—the coin you chose might be temporarily unavailable for borrowing.

  • How to check: Log in to Binance, go to the [Margin Data] page, and see if the asset shows "Borrowable" in the borrowable column and the corresponding borrowing limit. If it shows "Not Borrowable" or the limit is 0, you cannot borrow it right now.

  • What to do: Make sure the asset is on the borrowable list and your desired amount does not exceed its borrowing limit. If it is restricted, choose a different coin you can borrow. These restrictions are usually temporary; follow Binance official announcements.

Step 3: Check for Platform-Level Total Limits

Besides personal limits, Binance sets a Maximum Collateral Limit for each margin asset at the platform level.

  • Mechanism: When the total amount of a certain asset across all margin accounts reaches 80%–90% of the limit, new transfers or purchases of that asset as collateral are restricted. Above 90%, a single user can only transfer the equivalent of $50,000 at most per transaction. If it exceeds 100%, transfers are blocked entirely.

  • What to do: Look for a message like "Platform maximum collateral limit reached" on the borrowing page. If this is the reason, you must use a different asset as collateral or wait for the limit to free up.

Risk reminder: If you don't repay borrowed funds promptly, interest accrues hourly. The interest rate changes every hour based on market conditions, and when you borrow, the system automatically charges one hour's interest upfront. If your account has a negative balance that exceeds the threshold, the system may forcefully auto-convert other assets in your account to cover the shortfall. When this happens, borrowing and transfer functions are suspended.

Common Reasons for Failure

  • Insufficient platform inventory: Error INSUFFICIENT_INVENTORY means the platform doesn't have enough of that asset to lend. All borrowing requests will be rejected, regardless of your account status.

  • Pending borrow/repay operation: The system processes borrowing and repayment requests in sequence. If a previous request hasn't finished (usually takes about 100 milliseconds), new requests are blocked with error HAS_PENDING_TRANSACTION.

  • Auto-repay can silently fail: If auto-repay encounters the queue conflict above, it may not show an error but actually fail to repay. It's best to manually check your outstanding loan balance.

After Completion

  • Verification: After a successful borrow, go to [Margin Account] > [Liabilities] to confirm the borrowed coins and amounts are correctly credited.

  • Next step: Once the borrowed funds arrive, plan to repay soon. Leverage interest accrues hourly, so the longer you hold the debt, the higher the cost. If you plan to use leverage long-term, consider enabling the BNB interest discount feature (cross margin interest gets a 5% discount).
