Binance Cross or Isolated Margin? Capital Segregation Compared

The core difference between cross and isolated margin is simple: In cross margin mode, all money in your account acts as shared collateral. If one trade can't hold, it drags the entire account down. In isolated margin mode, each position's margin is independent; losing one won't affect the other positions.

Cross Margin: All Account Assets Share Risk

In cross margin mode, all available assets in your futures account serve as overall margin. No matter how many positions you open, they all share the same pool of funds, and the risk rate is calculated based on total assets and total liabilities.

  • Liquidation mechanism: When total account assets fall below the maintenance margin requirement, the system triggers forced liquidation, all positions are closed at once, and the account balance may go to zero.

  • Advantages: The liquidation price is farther away than in isolated mode, giving more resistance to volatility; suitable for hedging and quantitative trading. For example, during sideways markets, cross margin positions are less likely to be stopped out easily.

  • Disadvantages: Losses from one position automatically pull funds from other parts of the account until the entire account is liquidated. If you have several altcoin positions, a sudden wick can blow up one, and all the others will follow.

Isolated Margin: Each Position Is Independently Separate

In isolated margin mode, each position has its own dedicated margin and they don't interfere with one another. Each trading pair is an independent isolated margin account, and you can only transfer in the corresponding coins (e.g., a BTCUSDT isolated account can only hold BTC and USDT).

  • Liquidation mechanism: When a position's loss exceeds its allocated margin, that position is liquidated individually; other positions and the account balance are unaffected. Only that position's margin is lost.

  • Advantages: Risk isolation, ideal for trading multiple products at the same time or running different strategies.

  • Disadvantages: Each position's liquidation price is closer, making it easier to trigger liquidation. To hold through, you must repeatedly add margin, which can easily turn small losses into big ones.

Risk warning: In isolated margin mode, each position needs to be topped up separately; the system will not automatically transfer funds from your other isolated or cross margin accounts. If a position hits liquidation while you're offline, that position's margin goes straight to zero—there's no waiting for manual action.

Real Example: Both Using 2000 USDT to Long BTC

Binance's official documentation gives a clear comparison:

ComparisonUser A (Isolated)User B (Cross)
Initial Capital2000 USDT2000 USDT
Margin Used1000 USDTAll account funds
Liquidation Price8000 USD7000 USD
BTC Drops to $8000Lose 1000 USDT, liquidated, remaining 1000 USDTLose 1000 USDT, position still open
BTC Continues FallingCould lose all 2000 USDT

In cross margin, the liquidation price is farther, giving more room to weather the storm, but if triggered, it's a total wipeout. In isolated margin, liquidation is closer, but you only lose that one trade.

How to Use

  • Verification: Before opening a position, check the [Cross/Isolated] toggle on the trading interface to confirm you've selected the right mode. After opening, the [Positions] page shows each position's margin mode.

  • Selection tips: If you trade multiple symbols, use isolated margin. If you trade only one symbol and want maximum capital efficiency, go with cross margin. Note: In cross margin, you cannot run multiple grid bots on the same trading pair, and adjusting a cross margin position affects the entire strategy mix.
