Does Mass Index Above 27 Mean a Reversal? Signal Verification Guide

 /
2

Mass Index above 27 does not mean an immediate reversal. 27 is only the starting point of what Dorsey called a "Bulge." The real signal requires two conditions at the same time: the indicator first rises above 27, then falls back below 26.5. If you act as soon as you see 27, you are waiting for a signal that has not finished forming yet.

More importantly, Mass Index itself does not tell you the reversal direction. It measures the expansion and contraction of the high-low range. It only hints that the trend may be losing strength, not whether price will go up or down next. You need another directional tool such as EMA, MACD, or price structure to confirm which way to trade.

Formula and Parameters

Mass Index is calculated in three steps:

  1. Calculate the high-low range for each candle: High minus Low.

  2. Apply a 9-period EMA to this range, then apply another 9-period EMA to that first EMA.

  3. Divide the first EMA by the second EMA to get a ratio. Then add up the ratios from the last 25 periods.

The formula can be written as:

MI = SUM( EMA(High−Low, 9) / EMA(EMA(High−Low, 9), 9), 25 )

The standard parameters are 9 and 25. Dorsey fixed these settings in his original work. The 9 is the smoothing period for the two EMAs, and 25 is the summation window. You can adjust them, but shorter values create more false signals, and longer values create more lag.

Where the 27 and 26.5 Thresholds Apply

The number 27 comes from US stock data in the 1990s. Dorsey observed that when the price range expands quickly, pushing MI up, and then contracts, pulling MI back down, a trend reversal often follows. He used 27 as the trigger line for a "Bulge" and 26.5 as the confirmation line.

But this threshold cannot be applied directly to every market. Crypto assets have larger daily swings than traditional stocks. It is not unusual for BTC to push MI above 30 during normal volatility. If you keep using 27/26.5 in crypto, signals will trigger frequently and most of them will be noise. Pineify's guide suggests using 30/29 as adjusted thresholds for crypto assets, and 24/23.5 for low-volatility assets such as Treasury bond ETFs. A safer approach is to review the specific instrument you trade and find the 90th percentile of its MI readings, then use that value as your bulge threshold.

How to Confirm the Signal and Find the Direction

The classic Mass Index setup is called the Reversal Bulge:

Step 1: Confirm the bulge is complete. MI first rises above the threshold, which is 27 by default, and then falls back below the confirmation line at 26.5. If it only rises and does not fall, the signal is not valid. Many traders enter as soon as MI breaks above 27. This is one of the most common mistakes. It is completely normal for MI to stay above 27 for 5 to 10 candles before falling back.

Step 2: Use a directional indicator to decide the direction. After the bulge is confirmed, look at the relationship between price and moving averages. The rules from cTrader documentation are:

  • Go long: after the bulge is confirmed, price crosses above the 9-period EMA.

  • Go short: after the bulge is confirmed, price crosses below the 9-period EMA.

Gate Learn's crypto guide uses a 9 EMA and 25 EMA crossover: after the bulge is confirmed, a 9 EMA crossing above the 25 EMA, a golden cross, is a long signal. A cross below, a death cross, is a short signal. Both rules follow the same logic. MI tells you that a turn may happen, and the EMA tells you which way it may turn.

Trend Strength and Range Market Conditions

Mass Index works better in range-bound or cyclical markets and tends to fail in strong trends. The reason is simple. In a strong trend, range expansion is a feature of the trend itself, not a warning of reversal. If you treat every range expansion as a reversal signal, you will get stopped out again and again.

A practical filter is to check ADX (14). Pineify's guide gives these observed numbers: when ADX is above 25, the success rate of bulge signals is only about 28%. When ADX is below 25, the success rate is about 62%. If you use ADX as a filter, ignore MI signals in strong trends and only pay attention to them when the trend is weakening or the market is range-bound.

Stop Loss and Holding Time

A bulge signal suggests a possible reversal within the next 3 to 10 candles, not necessarily on the next candle. The market may drift back and forth for several candles before actually turning. A stop loss of 1x ATR is easy to hit during this drift phase. Pineify suggests using 1.5 to 2 times ATR (14) as the stop distance. On the SPY daily chart, 2x ATR is roughly 3% to 4% of price. That is wide enough to survive the drift but not so wide that a failed signal causes too much damage.

One Detail Worth Checking

Mass In dex values may not match across different platforms. TA-Lib documentation clearly mentions that different implementations handle the seed value of EMA differently. Libraries such as Tulip Indicators and ta4j may start with different initial values than TA-Lib. They only converge to the same value after enough candles have passed. If you see different MI values in TradingView and in your own quant environment, first check how each one initializes the EMA instead of assuming the indicator is calculated wrong.
