Why Are OKX X-Perps Positions Restricted? Modes, Margin, and Adjustments

If your OKX X-Perps position is restricted, it usually does not mean your account is broken. Instead, you have likely hit one of the platform's built-in limits. The three most direct causes are: you selected the wrong position mode (one-way vs. hedge), your margin is already being used by other positions or open orders, or your order size exceeds the tiered position limit for that contract.

Position Mode: Why "Adding" Turns Into "Closing"

This is the most common reason beginners see a restricted position.

X-Perps has two position modes: One-way mode and Hedge mode. In one-way mode, you can only hold one direction in a contract at a time, either long or short. If you already hold a BTC long position and then try to place another buy order, that order will not increase your long position. Instead, it will first reduce your existing short position, if you have one, or directly close your long position, depending on what direction you currently hold.

If you hold a long position and want to add to it, the new order will be merged into the existing position. The position becomes larger and the average entry price is recalculated. You will not see a "second position" appear.

How to check: Before placing an order, look at the direction and size you actually hold in the Positions area. If you thought you were adding to a position but it became smaller or disappeared, one-way mode is probably the reason.

In hedge mode, you can hold long and short positions at the same time. But note: to close one side, you must use the dedicated close action for that side. Placing a reverse order directly will not close the position. Instead, it will open a new position on the other side.

When to switch: You can only switch position mode when you have no open positions and no open orders. Close positions and cancel open orders first, then change the mode in the trading page settings.

Margin: Balance Looks Enough, but Available Margin Is Not

Even if your account has a balance, available margin may still be insufficient. OKX officially lists several common situations:

  • Funds are in another account group: Balances in the funding account must be transferred to the trading account before they can be used for X-Perps orders.

  • Margin is already being used by other positions or open orders: Used balances still belong to your account, but they cannot be used as available margin. Reducing positions or canceling open orders can free them up.

  • Margin mode is isolated: An isolated position can only use the margin assigned to that position. It will not draw on other balances in the account.

There is also an easy-to-miss detail: collateral assets are not the same as settlement assets. Even if you hold an asset and have enabled it as a margin asset, the order page may still show no available margin if the settlement currency of the order is different from the asset you hold. In addition, collateral assets are usually counted at a discount rate, so the actual position they can support may be lower than the market value suggests.

Check in this order: First confirm what the settlement asset of the order is, then confirm the balance is in the trading account, then confirm that asset has been enabled as a margin asset in settings, and finally check whether the position mode is using up most of the margin.

Position Tiers: Why "Balance × Leverage" Is Not the Maximum Position

X-Perps uses a tiered position system. As a position grows larger, it enters a higher risk tier. Each higher tier requires more maintenance margin and allows lower maximum leverage.

This means the maximum position you can open is usually smaller than the simple calculation of "balance × maximum leverage," and the larger the position, the bigger the gap becomes.

Each contract has different tier parameters. Contracts with shallower liquidity have much tighter tier limits than actively traded contracts. With the same balance and leverage, the maximum position you can open on two different contracts may differ significantly.

How to check: When setting position size in the order panel, the system will show the current maximum allowed for that contract. If that number is smaller than you expected, it is the tier limit for that contract at that size, not an account error.

Global Position Limits: Hard Caps in Extreme Cases

In addition to tier limits, OKX also has a platform-wide position limit. The purpose is to prevent market risk from being overly concentrated in a few traders.

The rule is: if the USD value of your positions and open orders in a contract, combined across main account and sub-accounts, reaches or exceeds max(platform total position value in that contract × position percentage threshold, per-user position cap), the system will reject your new opening orders in that direction. Reduce-only orders are not affected.

For example, suppose a contract has a position percentage threshold of 20% and a per-user cap of 250,000 USD. If the platform's total position value in that contract is 500,000 USD, your limit is max(500,000 × 20%, 250,000) = 250,000 USD. If the total position grows to 20,000,000 USD, your limit becomes max(20,000,000 × 20%, 250,000) = 4,000,000 USD.

Long and short limits are calculated separately. New long orders are rejected when the long limit is triggered, and new short orders are rejected when the short limit is triggered.

What to Check When an Order Is Rejected

OKX's official checklist:

  1. Read the rejection message: The rejection reason shown in the app is the most direct clue.

  2. Confirm suitability assessment: X-Perps requires users to complete a suitability assessment before trading.

  3. Check available margin and account type: Confirm funds are in the trading account and the selected settlement asset is available.

  4. Verify position mode: Confirm whether it is one-way or hedge mode, and what direction you currently hold.

  5. Check order parameters: Whether price, quantity, and trigger conditions meet product rules.

  6. Check regional restrictions: Some regions may not be able to trade certain X-Perps products.

If you have checked all of the above and the problem continues, provide the following when contacting customer service: contract name, timestamp, order type, and a screenshot of the error message. This can significantly speed up troubleshooting.
