OKX TWAP Execution: Paused or Auto-Ended When Price Exceeds Range?

OKX's TWAP strategy will pause, not automatically end, when the price exceeds the set range. Once the last price falls back within the limit, the strategy automatically resumes placing orders.

1. Understanding the TWAP Strategy's Price Limit Logic

The TWAP strategy splits a large order into smaller ones and executes them over time. To avoid buying too expensively or selling too cheaply, users can set a price limit. When the market price goes beyond this limit, the strategy's behavior is to "pause," not "terminate."

For example: you want to buy BTC below 10,500 USDT and set the price limit at 10,500. If the current market price is 20,500 USDT (above the limit), the strategy will pause and stop buying. It will automatically resume when the price falls back below 10,500.

This follows the same logic as a regular limit order, but TWAP automates it – it waits for the price to meet the condition before placing further orders.

2. What Exactly Happens When Price Exceeds the Range

When the last price exceeds your set price limit (for a buy strategy), OKX's official documentation states:

"The order will be suspended when the last price is higher than the limit price and resumed when the last price is below the limit price again."

In other words, the order gets paused. During the pause, the strategy will not place new orders until the price returns within the limit.

It does not end automatically. As long as the strategy is still running, it will keep waiting for the price to come back, rather than stopping itself and marking as "completed." The strategy only ends when the total filled quantity reaches the set "total amount."

3. How to Tell if the Strategy Is Paused or Ended

Step 1: Check the strategy status

  • What to do: Go to [Strategy Trading] → [Running] and find your TWAP strategy.

  • How to do it: Look at the status field.

    • If it shows "Running" but there are no recent fills and the current price exceeds the limit → the strategy is in a paused state.

    • If it shows "Ended" or "Completed" → the strategy has finished (the total amount has been fully filled).

    • If it shows "Abnormal" or "Stopped" → it may have been automatically stopped due to unforeseen circumstances such as a trading halt on the pair.

  • Completion: You have confirmed the current status of the strategy.

Step 2: Check the relationship between the current price and the limit price

  • What to do: Compare the current last price with the "price limit" you set.

  • How to do it: If the current price is above the limit price (for a buy) or below the limit price (for a sell), the strategy pauses and waits for the price to return.

  • Completion: You have confirmed that the price being out of range is the direct cause of "no further orders being placed."

4. What to Do if You Don't Want to Wait

If you decide the price is unlikely to return within the limit in the short term, you can manually stop the strategy.

Step 3: Manually stop the strategy

  • What to do: Under [Strategy Trading] → [Running], click on the strategy and select [Stop Strategy].

  • How to do it: After stopping, the already filled portion remains unchanged, and the unfilled remaining quantity will be released back to your account.

  • Completion: The strategy is stopped, and the remaining assets in your account are released.

Common mistake: Users mistake "paused" for "ended," thinking the strategy will no longer execute. In reality, it will automatically resume as soon as the price returns. If you manually create a new TWAP strategy at this point, it could result in duplicate positions or additional slippage costs.

Risk reminder: Each TWAP order is sent as IOC (Immediate-Or-Cancel). Any unfilled portion of a single order is canceled immediately. The pause during a price limit breach itself incurs no extra fees, but the market may experience sharp fluctuations while you wait, causing the fill price to deviate from your expectations when trading resumes.

How to know you've handled it correctly after these checks?

Go to the strategy details page and check "filled quantity" and "remaining quantity." If the remaining quantity is not yet zero, the strategy is still running, just paused. If the price is still outside the limit, the strategy won't move. If you want to keep waiting, you don't need to do anything – it will automatically resume when the price returns. If you no longer want to wait, click "Stop Strategy" to release the remaining assets, then handle them in another way.
