Should Taiwanese Users Register on OKX With Phone Number or Email?
The short answer is: you must bind both. It's not an either-or choice. The platform requires both a phone number and an email during registration. For Taiwanese users, we recommend using email as the primary registration method and then binding a Taiwanese phone number (+886). This is more stable and makes changing your phone number later hassle-free without rebuilding your entire account.
1. First, Understand: The Platform Does Not Allow "One or the Other"
What to do: Confirm OKX's registration rules to avoid interpreting it as a "phone number OR email" choice.
How to do it: According to the OKX official help center:
When creating an account, you must bind both a phone number and an email address. Neither can be omitted.
During the registration process, the system will ask you to verify both your email and phone number in sequence. Both must be completed.
Key distinction: You are only choosing which one to use as the initial registration method. That does not mean the other can be skipped.
2. Recommendation for Taiwanese Users: Email First
What to do: Decide which method to start with based on the actual circumstances of Taiwanese users.
How to do it:
Scenario A: Register with email (recommended)
Choose email as the registration entry point and enter a commonly used email address (Gmail, Outlook, etc.).
After successful registration, the system will guide you to bind a phone number. At this stage, select the +886 country code and enter your Taiwanese phone number.
Advantage: Email is not affected by changing carriers, and changing your phone number later will not affect account access.
Scenario B: Register with a Taiwanese phone number (+886)
Technically possible; Taiwanese phone numbers can normally receive OKX SMS verification codes.
However, a phone number may encounter issues with receiving codes due to number porting or international roaming, and changing your phone number later is more cumbersome than changing your email.
How to know you've completed this step: You have decided to register with email first and then bind your Taiwanese phone number.
When entering a Taiwanese phone number, select +886 as the international code and remove the leading "0" from the number. For example, 0912-345-678 should be entered as 912345678.
3. Specific Registration Steps
What to do: Complete the registration and binding process according to the actual flow.
How to do it:
Step 1: Email Registration
Open the OKX app or official website and click Sign Up.
In the country/region of residence dropdown, select "China".
Enter your email address (Gmail or Outlook recommended), then request and enter the email verification code.
If you have a referral code, enter it during this step (it cannot be added after registration).
Step 2: Bind a Taiwanese Phone Number
When the system asks you to add a phone number, select the country code +886.
Enter your Taiwanese phone number (without the leading 0).
Request and enter the SMS verification code.
Step 3: Set a Password
At least 8 characters; it is recommended to include uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special symbols.
How to know you've completed this step: The page shows that registration was successful, and both email and phone number have been bound.
4. Complete KYC Identity Verification
What to do: After registration, you must complete identity verification; otherwise, you cannot trade, deposit, or withdraw.
How to do it:
Go to User Center → Identity Verification.
Select "China" as your country of residence (consistent with registration).
Upload your Taiwan ID card or passport, and complete the facial recognition process.
Submit and wait for review; it usually takes a few minutes to 24 hours.
How to know you've completed this step: Your account status shows "Verified" or "Standard Identity Verification".
Common reasons for failure:
Blurry or reflective ID photos
Incorrect facial recognition movements
Registration region does not match the region on the ID document
Risk reminder:
OKX is not an exchange registered with the Taiwan Financial Supervisory Commission. In case of disputes, they must be handled through OKX customer service and overseas arbitration channels.
Starting from June 24, 2024, OKX has suspended C2C trading in New Taiwan Dollars (TWD) for Taiwanese users. For deposits and withdrawals, it is recommended to use legitimate exchanges in Taiwan such as MAX or BitoPro as intermediaries.
