Common Issues International Students Encounter When Opening an OKX Account

Signing up for an OKX account as an international student rarely gets stuck on the basic registration process itself — the biggest bottleneck is "KYC and address verification". To put it simply: registering with a local phone number from your country of study will usually work, but during the identity verification step, inconsistencies between your address proof and ID documentation will lead to a large number of applications being rejected.

1. Confirm Your Country/Region of Residence Is Within OKX's Service Scope

Action to take: Before preparing any verification materials, first confirm that the country or region where you are studying is eligible to use OKX. This is the most preliminary and critical step.

How to proceed:

OKX does not provide global coverage of services, and access is restricted in some countries and regions in compliance with local laws and regulations. According to official information from the OKX Help Center, if you see a restriction prompt when accessing the OKX App or website, the service is temporarily unavailable in that location.

In addition, if the VPN IP address you use comes from a restricted region, your access may also be blocked by the system, preventing you from proceeding with the registration process.

Completion criteria: You have confirmed that your current country/region of residence is not on OKX's restricted service list.

Prerequisite: You can normally access the official OKX website or mobile app.

Common failure reasons: Using a VPN to switch to a region for registration that is also on the restricted list, or frequent IP changes triggering the platform's risk control system.

2. Prepare Phone Number and Email for Registration

Action to take: Complete account registration using a personal phone number under your own name and an active email address that can normally receive incoming messages.

How to proceed:

OKX requires you to bind both a phone number and an email address during registration.

  • Phone number: It is generally recommended to use a local phone number issued in your country of study to register. Chinese mobile phone numbers that are roaming abroad may fail to receive verification SMS codes, so using a local number is far more reliable.

  • Email: QQ Mail, 163 Mail, Gmail, Outlook and other mainstream email services are all acceptable. The core requirement is that you can log in and receive verification emails normally.

Completion criteria: Your mobile phone can receive verification codes, and you can log into your email to access incoming messages.

Prerequisite: Your phone number is in active use, and you remember your email account password.

Common failure reasons: Typos in the phone number or email address leading to failure to receive verification messages.

3. Settle Address Proof (The Step Most Likely to Block Your Verification)

Action to take: Prepare valid proof of your residential address in your country of study.

How to proceed:

Identity verification (KYC) is a mandatory process after registration. Accounts that have not completed real-name verification cannot perform operations such as buying and selling crypto, or depositing and withdrawing funds.

OKX has clear requirements for address proof:

  • Accepted document types: Utility bills (electricity, water, gas), bank statements, rental agreements issued within the last 3 months.

  • Document requirements: Must clearly display your full legal name, full residential address, and issue date.

  • Validity period: The issue date must be within the most recent 3 months.

If you live in a shared rental property and the utility bills are not under your name, a bank statement or rental agreement is a more viable option. Personal letters, parcels or delivery receipts are not accepted as valid address proof.

Completion criteria: You have a valid document issued within the last 3 months that shows your full name and your local residential address in your country of study.

Prerequisite: You have a stable, compliant residential address in your country of study.

Common failure reasons:

  1. Address mismatch: The address you entered during registration does not match the address shown on your address proof. This is the most common reason for KYC rejection, so make sure all information is fully consistent.

  2. Expired date: The issue date of the bill or document is older than 3 months.

  3. Ineligible document type: Many international students report getting stuck at this step because they do not pay utility bills directly and cannot provide a qualifying utility document.

4. Prepare Valid Identity Document

Action to take: Have a valid government-issued ID ready to pass real-person identity verification.

How to proceed:

OKX KYC requires you to submit a government-issued valid identity document and complete a facial recognition check. Commonly accepted ID types include:

  • Passport

  • National ID card

  • Driver's license

Note: Your ID document must be within its validity period, and the name on the ID must match all your registered account information.

Completion criteria: Your ID document is on hand, fully legible, and ready to be photographed and uploaded.

Prerequisite: Your ID document has not expired.

Common failure reasons: Blurry photos, glare on the ID document leading to audit failure. One identity document can only be used to verify one OKX account.
