OKX Perpetual Futures: How to Manage Multiple Positions Separately?

On OKX perpetual futures, when you open multiple positions, they are merged into one combined position by default and cannot be managed separately. To change this, you need to enable the Split Position feature. Once enabled, each new order will create an independent sub-position with its own average entry price, PnL, margin, and take-profit/stop-loss settings. Each sub-position can be closed individually without affecting the others.

But there is one key point you must understand clearly: Split Position only changes how positions are displayed and managed. It does not change how margin and liquidation are calculated. Your risk is still calculated based on the combined total position. Individual sub-positions do not show a liquidation price. You need to check the "Combined" tab to see the liquidation price and margin ratio. So Split Position solves the problem of "viewing and managing separately", not "isolating risk separately".

Requirements and Where to Enable Split Position

There is one hard requirement for enabling Split Position: your account must have no open positions, no pending orders, and no take-profit/stop-loss orders. If you currently have a merged position from multiple entries, you need to close all positions and cancel all pending orders before you can turn on this feature.

The setting is located in the futures trading settings: go to the futures trading page on the OKX App or website, find trading settings or preferences, and turn on the "Split Position" toggle. Once enabled, the positions page will show two sub-tabs: "Combined" and "Split", with the Split view displayed by default.

After enabling, each new order will become an independent sub-position. You cannot add to an existing sub-position. If you want to increase exposure in the same direction, you must open a new order, which will create a new sub-position.

How to Manage Sub-Positions Separately

Each sub-position independently displays information including average entry price, position size, PnL and PnL percentage, margin, mark price, and take-profit/stop-loss. You can set take-profit and stop-loss for individual sub-positions. When triggered, only that sub-position will be closed, and other sub-positions will not be affected. You can also click "Market Close All" on a specific sub-position to close only that one.

Here is a common pitfall: do not place closing orders from the order panel. Closing orders submitted from the order panel cannot be assigned to a specific sub-position. The system will allocate them according to default rules, and you may close the wrong position. To close a specific sub-position, you must use the button on that specific sub-position.

Split Position Is Not the Same as Isolated Margin

Many people confuse "Split Position" with "Isolated Margin". Isolated Margin is a margin mode where each isolated position's margin is calculated independently, and losses are limited to that position's margin. Split Position is a display and management feature that does not change how margin is calculated.

In other words, you can use Split Position in Isolated Margin mode or in Cross Margin mode. Split Position itself does not provide risk isolation. If you want the effect of "this trade losing does not affect that trade", you need Isolated Margin mode, not Split Position. However, in Isolated Margin mode, multiple orders for the same contract in the same direction will still be merged in display unless you also enable Split Position. Using both together gives you the combined effect of "separate viewing + risk isolation".

One Limitation to Be Aware Of

OKX position modes include one-way mode and hedge mode. In one-way mode, the system automatically merges orders of the same direction, same type, and same currency. Some official documentation mentions that "Split Position is not supported for same direction, same type, and same currency", but this differs from the description on the Split Position feature page, which clearly states it supports both open/close mode and buy/sell mode, and works with both isolated and cross margin. In practice, if you enable Split Position and find that new orders in the same direction are still being merged, check your current position mode setting. Switching to hedge mode may solve the merging issue, but the trade-off is that long and short positions for the same contract will exist simultaneously and will not offset each other.

The Split Position feature was launched around August 2026. If you see older tutorials saying "OKX does not support Split Position", that information is outdated. Refer to the actual toggle in the current trading settings page.

What You Should Do Now

If you have open positions or pending orders, first decide whether you are willing to close your current positions to enable Split Position. If not, continue using Combined mode and use the "Fixed Quantity" take-profit/stop-loss mode to partially achieve separate management — fixed quantity take-profit/stop-loss does not change with adding or reducing positions, so you can set independent exit conditions for a portion of the combined position. If you are willing, close positions and cancel orders, then enable Split Position. After that, each new order will automatically become an independent sub-position. After enabling, do a small test order first to confirm it appears separately in the Split view, then continue adding orders at your own pace.
