OKX Wallet: Mnemonic Phrase or MPC? Recovery Methods Compared

OKX Wallet currently offers two main recovery paths: the traditional mnemonic phrase wallet and the MPC (Multi-Party Computation) keyless wallet. The key difference is that mnemonic wallet recovery relies on those 12 words, while the MPC wallet depends on private key shards stored in three separate places and a cloud backup. If you are unsure which one to choose, remember this: MPC wallet recovery does not require you to remember a mnemonic phrase, but it heavily depends on your device cloud service (iCloud or Google Drive) and a recovery password, whereas the mnemonic wallet is all about that string of words taking you everywhere.

Step 1: Identify Your Wallet Type to Find the Right Recovery Entry

Before you start recovering, you must first figure out which type of wallet you created, because the recovery process is completely different.

  • Situation A: You created an OKX Web3 wallet through the "Create Wallet" process and never backed up a mnemonic phrase. This is most likely an MPC wallet. You can confirm this by looking for options like "Emergency Exit" or "Cloud Backup" in the wallet settings. If you don't see these and you backed up 12 English words, then you are in Situation B.

  • Situation B: When creating or importing the wallet, you backed up 12 English words (mnemonic phrase). This is the traditional mnemonic wallet. To recover it, simply go to the wallet page and select [Import Wallet] -> [Mnemonic Phrase or Private Key].

High risk alert: If yours is an MPC wallet, you do not have a mnemonic phrase as backup. If your device is lost and you did not enable cloud backup (iCloud/Google Drive), and you also forgot your wallet password, your assets cannot be recovered. OKX is a non-custodial wallet and cannot reset your password or restore your assets.

Step 2: MPC Wallet Recovery (For Situation A)

MPC wallet recovery relies on distributed private key shards, not a mnemonic phrase. There are two main methods:

  • Cloud Recovery (Recommended, when your device is unavailable): On the OKX Web3 wallet home page, tap [Add Wallet] -> [Import Wallet] -> [Cloud Backup], select the cloud service you used for backup (iCloud or Google Drive), sign in, and enter the cloud backup password you set at that time. The system will download the corresponding shard and work with the shard on OKX's server to restore the wallet. Completion check: After a successful recovery, the wallet address and assets should be exactly the same as before.

  • Scan QR Code from Old Device (When the old device is still working): On the new device, select [Import Wallet] -> [Restore Keyless Wallet] and use the old device to scan the QR code to sync the recovery. This method requires the old device to be still operational and you must remember its wallet password.

Common failure reason: The most common reason for cloud recovery failure is entering a wrong backup password. This password is set separately when creating the wallet, not your login password. If you forget it and have not logged in on another device, you cannot recover via cloud backup.

Step 3: Mnemonic Phrase Wallet Recovery (For Situation B)

  • Process: On the OKX Web3 wallet home page, tap [Add Wallet] -> [Import Wallet] -> [Mnemonic Phrase or Private Key]. You must enter word by word, in the exact order, the 12 mnemonic words you backed up (separate words with spaces), then set a new wallet password.

  • Completion check: After entering the correct mnemonic phrase, your wallet address and assets will be restored immediately. Even if the OKX platform is unavailable, you can recover your wallet in any other wallet that supports the BIP39 standard (such as MetaMask).

Risk warning: Mnemonic phrases are the only proof to restore your wallet. Never take screenshots and save them on your phone, and do not transmit them through any online channel. Once leaked, all your assets are at risk of being stolen.

How to verify the recovery: After recovery is complete, check the coin types and balances on the wallet's asset page. Also, copy the recovered wallet address and search for it on the corresponding block explorer (like Etherscan) to confirm that the on-chain assets and transaction history are correct.
