When making your first deposit, only certain cryptocurrencies require a Tag (also called Memo). The key rule: On the OKX deposit page, after selecting the coin and network, if you see a box labeled "Tag" or "Tag/Memo", you must fill it in. If no such field appears, you can skip it.
A Tag is a string of numbers (usually 7–8 digits) that ensures your deposit address is unique. Coins that use Destination Tag technology, such as XRP, XLM, and ATOM, all require a Tag.
Step-by-Step: Example with XRP
Find your address and Tag on OKX: Open the OKX app, go to [Assets] — [Deposit], search for XRP, and select the Ripple network. The system will tell you that this coin needs a Tag. The page will then show both your [Deposit Address] and a [Tag] (a series of numbers).
Withdraw from the other platform: On the platform you're withdrawing from, enter your OKX address and Tag. Address and Tag are two separate fields — make sure you fill each one correctly.
Important Risk Note: If you forget or enter the wrong Tag, your funds will reach OKX's shared wallet but won't be automatically credited to your account – they will essentially be lost. If this happens, you must contact customer support immediately and provide details: the coin, amount, correct Tag, wrong Tag, and transaction hash (TxID). Engineers will try to recover your funds manually, but there is no guarantee.
Common Reasons for Failure
The most typical mistake is assuming that no coin needs a Tag, or mixing up the address and Tag – for example, putting the Tag into the address field or the other way around. Some platforms call the Tag a "Memo", "Note", or "Destination Tag". Different names, but it's the same thing.
Next Steps
Before your first deposit, always check the OKX deposit page to see if a Tag field appears for your chosen coin. It's a good idea to send a small test amount first and confirm it arrives fully before moving larger sums. If you're not sure whether the receiving platform needs a Tag, check that platform's deposit page – if a Tag is required, it will be clearly shown.
