How to Limit Losses on Your First Binance Copy Trade: Amount and Ratio Settings

When you start copy trading for the first time, you can limit your losses using two key controls in the settings: Copy Trading Mode and Total Stop-Loss. If you set these two correctly, you can lock in your maximum loss. After choosing a lead trader on the copy trading page, you will see a settings screen with several important parameters that directly cap your losses.

Choose the Right Copy Mode: Fixed Amount Is Easier to Control per Trade

Binance copy trading offers two modes:

  • Fixed Amount: Each trade uses a set amount (for example, 20 USDT per trade) until your total copy budget runs out. The loss per trade is predictable, making it suitable for beginners.
  • Fixed Ratio: The system automatically calculates your trade size based on the lead trader's position ratio. Whatever size the lead trader opens, you follow proportionally. Your risk is directly tied to the lead trader, so losses are less predictable.

If you are a beginner, it is smarter to choose Fixed Amount so you always know how much you could lose per trade.

Set a Total Stop-Loss: Your Most Direct Loss Brake

On the copy trading settings screen, find the "Stop-Loss" or "Maximum Loss Limit" field and enter a specific amount. Once your total cumulative loss reaches this number, the system will automatically stop copying new trades from the lead trader.

Risk Reminder: When the stop-loss is triggered, your existing open positions will not be closed automatically. If the lead trader still holds positions, your copied positions may continue to have floating losses. The stop-loss only stops opening new trades, it is not a "liquidate all" button. When planning to use the stop-loss to protect your funds, you must also think about how to handle those remaining positions.

Common Setting That Beginners Often Miss

Many newcomers only set the total stop-loss but forget to set slippage protection. If the market moves sharply, copy orders might fail because the slippage exceeds the limit. After several consecutive failures, the copy trading project may shut down automatically.

Final Checkup

After filling in the total amount and stop-loss on the settings screen, go to "Advanced Settings" and find the "Slippage" option. Tick it and confirm the maximum slippage threshold (the default for spot is 0.3%; you need to set it for futures too). Before submitting, double-check your total copy budget and per-trade amount to make sure everything is within your risk comfort zone.
