For your very first crypto purchase, we recommend prioritizing P2P (peer-to-peer) trading instead of direct bank card purchase. The bank card purchase page looks straightforward, but it actually runs through third-party payment providers, which usually charge 2% to 3.5% in fees, and the fund arrival speed is not much faster than P2P. P2P has the advantage of zero platform fees, and supports multiple payment methods including Alipay, WeChat Pay, and bank transfer, making it far more beginner-friendly.
Why Choose P2P First
P2P trading means you trade directly with another OKX user, with OKX acting as the transaction guarantor. After you place an order, the platform will lock the seller's crypto in advance. After you complete the payment and the seller confirms receipt, the platform will then release the crypto to you. This model has low entry barriers, 0 fees, and the exchange rate applied is usually more favorable than direct bank card purchase.
Direct bank card purchase may seem faster, but your funds are sent to a third-party, and the platform will charge a 2%-3.5% service fee. Plus the exchange rate spread, you will end up receiving noticeably less crypto for the same amount of fiat money.
Step 1: Ensure You Have Completed Identity Verification
[What to do] Finish KYC verification, otherwise you cannot place P2P orders. [How to do] Open the OKX App → tap the personal avatar on the top left corner → select Identity Verification, then follow the prompts to upload your ID document and complete facial recognition. If you have not passed KYC, the P2P page will redirect you to the verification page automatically. [Completion Check] identity verification status shows "Verified".
Step 2: Enter P2P Market, Filter Trusted Merchants
[What to do] Find the P2P entry, and filter reliable sellers based on your preferred payment method and target crypto. [How to do] Open the OKX App → tap "Buy Crypto" on the homepage → switch to the "P2P" tab. Select your local fiat currency (such as CNY or HKD) on the top left, choose USDT as the crypto you want to buy, then pick the payment method you plan to use (Alipay / WeChat Pay / Bank Card). When filtering, focus on the seller's "order completion rate" and "total transaction volume": pick sellers with a completion rate above 95%, and prioritize those with valid transaction records, "Verified Merchant" or "Beginner Friendly" tags. [Completion Check] You select a qualified sell order that matches your payment method, and enter the order page.
Risk Reminder: All P2P trading operations must be completed inside the OKX App. Any request from the seller to add you on WeChat/QQ for private chat, or ask you to send a payment screenshot to them before clicking "I have paid" is a scam. OKX only protects transactions completed on the platform, and cannot intervene to resolve disputes if you communicate or transfer funds outside the platform.
Step 3: Place Order, Make Payment and Wait for Crypto Release
[What to do] Transfer money to the recipient account provided by the seller, then go back to the OKX App and tap "I Have Paid". [How to do] After confirming the order, copy the recipient account displayed on the order page, and complete the transfer via your selected Alipay / WeChat Pay / banking app. Immediately go back to the OKX App and click "I Have Paid" after you finish the transfer. Then wait for the seller to confirm receipt of your payment and release the crypto, which usually takes 10 to 30 minutes. [Completion Check] You receive an in-app notification saying "Order Completed", and the USDT appears in your spot funding account.
Common Reasons for Failed Transactions
Many users forget to go back to the OKX App and tap "I Have Paid" after sending the money, so the seller does not get the system notification, which leads to delayed crypto release. Another common issue is using the wrong payment method: if you selected Alipay as the payment method for the order but transferred via bank card instead, the seller will not find the matching payment record and refuse to release your crypto.
Next Steps After You Get Your Crypto
After you receive your USDT, you can go to the "Spot" page to place a limit order to buy BTC at your preferred price, with fees as low as 0.08% for Maker orders and 0.10% for Taker orders. If you only want to get familiar with the trading process quickly, you can also use the bank card "Quick Buy" channel directly, but note that its fees are much higher than P2P trading, so you can choose according to your own time cost and capital cost preference.
