When buying BTC on OKX for the first time, the total cost you pay is not just "buy price × quantity". It includes the buy price + trading fees + possible payment channel charges. If you do the math before placing an order, you won't be confused by receiving less BTC than expected after the purchase.

Step 1: Identify Your Purchase Channel — C2C, Convert, or Spot Trading

[What to do]: First, distinguish your order entry point, because each channel has a completely different cost structure.

[How to do it]: Open the OKX App and find the 【Buy Crypto】 or 【Trade】 entry on the home page.

Case A: Ordering via "Quick Buy" or "C2C" entry This is peer-to-peer trading, where users trade directly with each other. OKX does not charge C2C transaction fees to either party. However, you face two costs: first, the spread in the merchant's quote — the seller's listing price is usually higher than the spot order book price, which is the merchant's profit; second, the payment method itself may incur charges — bank card or Alipay transfers sometimes involve fees, which you bear yourself.

Case B: Ordering via "Convert" This is a quick swap tool where the system gives you a fixed price quote. The cost is not shown as a "fee", but as the difference between the Convert price and the spot order book price. This spread is the implicit cost of the instant execution service.

Case C: Ordering via "Spot Trading" This is standard order book matching. Spot fees are charged separately for Maker (limit orders that provide liquidity) and Taker (orders that take liquidity). For regular users, the spot Maker fee rate is 0.08%, and the Taker fee rate is 0.10%.

Completion: You have confirmed which channel you are using and understand the corresponding fee structure.

Step 2: Calculate the Total Cost of a Spot Purchase

[What to do]: If you choose spot trading, use specific numbers to figure out how much you ultimately spent and how much BTC you received.

[How to do it]: Suppose you plan to buy BTC with 1000 USDT at market price, and the current BTC price is about 60,000 USDT, with a Taker fee of 0.10%.

Case A: Pay fees in the "received asset" (default method) 1000 USDT ÷ 60000 = 0.016666 BTC (theoretical amount). The fee is deducted from the BTC: 0.016666 × 0.10% = 0.0000166 BTC. Actual received amount ≈ 0.016649 BTC. You paid 1000 USDT and received 0.016649 BTC.

Case B: Pay fees in the "spent asset" (can be switched) The system uses extra USDT to pay the fee, so the BTC amount remains unchanged. Fee = 1000 USDT × 0.10% = 1 USDT. You actually pay 1001 USDT and receive 0.016666 BTC.

Case C: Placing a limit order that gets filled (Maker) Maker fee rate is 0.08%. For the same purchase, the fee is lower than a market order. Buying with 1000 U, if the fee is deducted from the received asset: 0.016666 × 0.08% = 0.0000133 BTC, received amount ≈ 0.016653 BTC, which is 0.000004 BTC more than with a taker order.

Completion: You have calculated three numbers for this trade: how much you paid, how much you received, and how much the fee was.

High Risk Alert: Although C2C trading has no platform fees, if you only focus on merchants with the "lowest price", you may encounter the risk of "black money". Orders with unusually low prices often involve funds of unknown origin, and participating in such transactions can lead to frozen accounts or even legal risks. When choosing a C2C merchant, prioritize completion rate and registration duration rather than just the price.

Step 3: Confirm Fee Payment Method Settings

[What to do]: Before a spot purchase, confirm whether the current fee deduction method is suitable for you.

[How to do it]: In the OKX spot trading page, under "Trade Settings", you can switch the fee payment method. The default is "deduct from the purchased asset" (received asset), but you can also switch to "pay with the spent asset".

Case A: You want to maximize the amount of BTC received Choose "pay with spent asset", paying extra USDT as the fee so the received BTC is not reduced.

Case B: You want to minimize the USDT spent Choose "pay with received asset", where the fee is deducted from BTC. The received amount will be slightly lower, but the upfront USDT expense is locked at 1000.

Completion: You have confirmed the current fee payment method and adjusted the setting according to your preference.

Common Failure Causes The most easily overlooked cost is the "payment channel fee". When placing a C2C order, the price you see is the merchant's unit price, but when you transfer via Alipay or bank card, the bank may charge a transfer fee. This fee does not appear on the OKX order, but it will appear on your bank statement. Another common mistake: in spot buying, the default "fee deducted from received asset" means the received quantity is less than expected, and beginners mistakenly think "the platform overcharged them", when in fact the fee was simply deducted in advance.

How to Verify After Completing the Operation After the trade, check in 【Assets】 - 【Spot Account】 whether the BTC balance matches your calculated "theoretical received amount". Also, find the "fee" details for that trade in the 【Bill】 to confirm that the deduction method matches your expectation.

Next Steps If you decide to hold long-term, you can go to the 【Spot Average Cost】 feature in OKX to view the average cost of your current position. If you are trading short-term, check your VIP level on the 【Fee】 page before placing an order; the higher your level, the lower the Maker/Taker rates. Verification channels: 【Assets】 - 【Spot Account】 balance, and the fee records in 【Bill】 - 【Spot Bill】.
