Robinhood Hits Record Revenue, But Crypto Income Plunges

The headline is accurate, but one key qualifier is needed: the drop in crypto income happened while Robinhood's overall revenue hit a record high, and the main drag on crypto was weaker trading activity itself, not a loss of market share. In the third quarter of 2026, Robinhood's total net revenue reached $1.424 billion, up 12% year over year and a record high. In the same period, crypto trading income was only $120 million, down 55% year over year. The core explanation for the contrast lies in trading volume: crypto notional trading volume fell 38% year over year to $50 billion. Within that, in-app trading volume dropped 48% to $21 billion, while Bitstamp volume fell 28% to $29 billion. Income fell faster than volume, which means the company is also earning less per dollar traded.

What is filling the crypto gap

Transaction-based revenue grew 19% to $867 million, as the drag from crypto was offset by other business lines. Options revenue rose 31% to $399 million, equity trading revenue rose 41% to $121 million, and event contracts revenue grew more than sixfold to $173 million. Event contracts passed crypto income for the first time this quarter, which is a notable structural shift. Robinhood's revenue engine is moving from "crypto-driven" to "multi-category-driven," and crypto is no longer the main character in the growth story.

Net profit did not look as good as revenue. Net income was $476 million, down 14% year over year, with diluted earnings per share of $0.51, down from $0.61 a year earlier. Operating expenses rose 16% to $739 million. Credit loss provisions jumped 173% to $71 million, and new businesses such as Trump Accounts and Rothera plus marketing spending also pushed costs higher. Record revenue but falling profit shows that the quality of growth is changing.

Why crypto income fell: market conditions, not competitive losses

Several sources attribute weak crypto trading to the market environment: higher volatility and continued outflows, while inflation pressure and relatively high interest rates make traditional assets like bonds more attractive to investors. Bitcoin is still down for the year. Although it has rebounded from its early July low, it remains weak overall. In this environment, retail investors are trading crypto less often and in smaller amounts. The number of in-app crypto trading customers fell 37%, further confirming that demand is shrinking.

One competitive explanation is worth considering: did Robinhood's crypto volume fall because users moved elsewhere? The available data does not support that view. Bitstamp's volume decline of 28% was smaller than the app's 48% decline, suggesting that institutional and professional channels are more resilient, while the retail pullback is industry-wide. There is no evidence that Robinhood lost share in crypto trading. The more likely story is that the whole pie is getting smaller.

An easily overlooked growth driver: Robinhood Chain

While crypto trading income plunged 55%, Robinhood's self-built chain contributed $26 million in revenue in the third quarter. DEX volume exceeded $80 billion, and on-chain fee revenue surpassed $50 million. If Chain revenue is removed from the crypto segment, traditional app plus Bitstamp crypto trading income was only about $94 million, down 6% quarter over quarter. That means part of the "$120 million crypto income" came from new business, and traditional crypto trading is actually weaker than the headline number suggests.

But the quality of Chain growth deserves a question mark. Some analysis points out that a large share of activity on Robinhood Chain still comes from crypto-native assets such as meme coins, rather than tokenized stocks. Tokenized stocks are currently mainly available to eligible non-U.S. users, and token holders' rights are not exactly the same as direct share ownership. Whether on-chain activity can turn into long-term demand for Robinhood's core financial services remains unanswered.

Signals worth watching

Whether crypto trading volume stabilizes. In the third quarter, in-app crypto trading volume was $21 billion. Quarter-over-quarter changes matter more than year-over-year comparisons. If this number falls again next quarter, retail crypto demand has not bottomed yet.

Whether event contracts revenue is sustainable. Quarterly revenue of $173 million and growth of more than six times year over year make event contracts Robinhood's fastest-growing category. But the regulatory environment for prediction markets and user retention are still uncertain. If event contracts growth slows while crypto stays weak, revenue growth pressure will reappear.

Robinhood Chain's revenue mix. If on-chain activity remains dominated by meme coins, its value to Robinhood's overall business is mostly trading fees rather than an ecosystem moat. If the share of trading in tokenized stocks starts to rise, that would be a much more important signal.
