No. Of the more than $114 trillion in assets custodied by DTCC, only 34 securities can currently be converted through its Tokenization Service (DTS), representing a total market cap of about $30 trillion. And that $30 trillion is the market value of the "eligible for conversion" pool — not the amount already on-chain. DTCC did not disclose the actual number of tokens minted or transfers made on day one. Reading "$30 trillion" as "trillions in assets are already on-chain" mistakes the pool of eligible securities for completed conversions.

What went live — and what didn't
On October 28, 2026, DTCC's depository subsidiary, DTC, officially launched its Tokenization Service. The way it works is not about moving stocks onto a public blockchain. Instead, it mints a digital copy of securities ownership already recorded on DTC's ledger — one that can move on-chain and be converted back. DTCC calls these "digital twins." Each token is backed 1:1 by the custodied security. CUSIPs, ownership records, economic rights, and investor protections all remain unchanged. No new securities are issued.
This means the U.S. stocks you hold at a brokerage do not automatically become on-chain tokens just because you use a certain wallet. Only DTC participant institutions can take part in conversion — currently 20 have signed access agreements, including JPMorgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley, State Street, BofA, Barclays, UBS, and Fidelity. Tokens move between wallets registered with DTC. This is a controlled institutional pipeline, not a DeFi on-ramp open to retail investors, and not a new retail trading app.
The difference between $30 trillion and $114 trillion
DTC custodies more than $114 trillion in assets. On day one, 34 securities are eligible for tokenization, including some Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs tracking major indexes, and U.S. Treasury securities. The combined market cap of these 34 securities is about $30 trillion.
But that $30 trillion is the market value of those securities themselves, not the amount that has been tokenized. Here's a hypothetical example: if an ETF has a market cap of $500 billion and is added to the eligible list, that does not mean $500 billion has already been turned into on-chain tokens. How many tokens were actually minted and how many conversions took place were not disclosed in DTCC's day-one announcement. Describing progress by the market value of eligible securities can easily create the impression that conversion has already happened at scale.
Also, the gap between $114 trillion and $30 trillion highlights another limitation: even within the eligible range, DTS covers only a small portion of DTC's custodied assets. The no-action relief the SEC granted DTC in December 2025 was itself limited in scope — covering only Russell 1000 stocks, ETFs tracking major indexes, and U.S. Treasury securities. This is not a license for "all securities to go on-chain."
The real constraint is in settlement, not minting
Tokenized securities can move between on-chain wallets 24/7, and "transfer is settlement." But conversion between traditional form and tokenized form still goes through DTC's conversion service, which only operates on business days from 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET, with a target processing time of under 15 minutes. Cross-chain transfers face the same limitation. This means you cannot convert stocks in your brokerage account into tokens over the weekend, nor can you convert tokens back into traditional holdings late at night.
The more substantial constraint comes from the settlement mechanism. The traditional U.S. equity settlement system relies on NSCC's netting, which compresses actual settlement volume to roughly 2% of total trade value. If the chain has neither netting nor on-chain cash (such as tokenized deposits or regulated stablecoins) to support delivery-versus-payment, then the "24/7 efficiency" is only half complete. In DTCC's own roadmap, cross-chain capability and on-chain cash settlement are both slated for 2027. Only two chains were connected on day one: Canton Network (a public chain) and DTCC's private Besu network. Stellar and Circle's Arc are expected to connect in 2027.
What it means for everyday token holders
The significance of this event is that traditional financial infrastructure is beginning to treat blockchain as a legitimate channel for record-keeping and transfer — not that "your stocks are going on-chain." For individuals who are not on DTC's participant list, there is no practical entry point in the near term. The tokenized stocks you may see on-chain (such as Ondo's SPYon and CRCLon) are products issued by third parties, backed by DTC Tokenized Entitlements generated by DTS. They are not the same as converting directly through DTS.
There are three specific signals worth watching: actual minting volume (whether DTCC later discloses the outstanding supply of on-chain tokens), collateral use cases materializing (the July pilot tested collateral pledging and securities lending — will institutions actually use tokenized securities as collateral after launch?), and the timeline for on-chain cash settlement. If on-chain cash and cross-chain capability arrive in 2027, the use of tokenized securities can expand from "digital twin custody" to real on-chain trading and collateralization. Until then, "trillions in custodied assets on-chain" is a direction, not a current fact.
