What Is BUIDL? Fund Shares, Yield, and Access Restrictions

 /
7

BUIDL is a tokenized money market fund issued by BlackRock, but its full name — "BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund" — already tells you the key limitation: this is a product for institutional qualified purchasers, and individual investors cannot participate directly. If you are searching for "how to buy BUIDL," the answer is straightforward: for the vast majority of readers, you cannot buy it. But the structure and mechanics of this fund are worth understanding, because it represents a standard approach to putting traditional financial assets on-chain.

What Is Inside the Fund

BUIDL invests 100% of its assets in cash, short-term U.S. Treasury bills, and repurchase agreements. The asset composition is essentially no different from a traditional money market fund. Each BUIDL token targets a net asset value of $1, and yield comes from interest on the underlying Treasury bills. After management fees are deducted, yield accrues daily and is paid out monthly in the form of new tokens sent to investor wallets.

In other words, if you hold 100 BUIDL tokens, after one month your wallet might hold around 100.3 BUIDL, with each token still worth $1. This is different from the model used by products like Yu'ebao, where the number of shares stays fixed and the net value rises slightly. BUIDL follows a path of increasing share count with a fixed net value. As of 2026, cumulative distributions have exceeded $100 million, and the current annualized yield is roughly between 3.4% and 5%, floating with market interest rates.

In terms of scale, BUIDL returned to around $2.8 billion in August 2026, representing about 18.5% of the entire tokenized Treasury market (approximately $15.1 billion). It was briefly overtaken by Circle's USYC in March, but quickly regained the top spot.

Who Is Eligible to Buy

The entry requirements are the first thing you need to understand about BUIDL. The fund is issued under SEC Reg D 506(c) and Section 3(c)(7) of the Investment Company Act, which means:

Qualified Purchaser status is required, typically meaning at least $5 million in investable assets. This standard applies to both individuals and institutions. Non-U.S. persons investing from abroad may also participate.

The minimum subscription amount is $5 million, and institutional subscriptions are reportedly $25 million. The minimum redemption threshold is $250,000.

Retail investors are explicitly excluded. You cannot buy BUIDL directly through a regular exchange, wallet, or any retail-facing entry point. All investors must complete KYC/AML verification through Securitize Markets, and wallet addresses must be whitelisted in the smart contract before they can receive or transfer BUIDL tokens.

Ondo Finance previously offered a product that packaged BUIDL and made it available to retail users at a much lower threshold (around $5,000), but that was Ondo's own product structure, not direct ownership of BlackRock's BUIDL shares. The terms, risks, and liquidity of such products differ from directly holding BUIDL and need to be evaluated separately.

How Compliance Is Built into the Token Itself

BUIDL embeds compliance requirements into its smart contract. Only wallet addresses on Securitize's whitelist can hold and transfer BUIDL, which means the token's circulation is strictly limited to verified qualified investors.

The advantage of this design is that if tokens are lost or stolen, Securitize can destroy them and reissue to the legitimate holder. The trade-off is that BUIDL has no open secondary market, and its liquidity is far lower than ordinary stablecoins. You cannot transfer BUIDL to any arbitrary address the way you can with USDC — you can only transfer to another investor who has already passed verification.

BNY Mellon serves as the fund's custodian and administrator, holding the underlying cash and securities, with PwC as auditor. BlackRock Financial Management, a BlackRock subsidiary, acts as investment manager.

How It Differs from Regular Stablecoins

Payment stablecoins like USDT and USDC aim to keep "1 dollar always equal to 1 dollar." Holders earn no yield, and the issuer keeps the interest from reserve assets. BUIDL's goal is to "generate yield while maintaining a $1 net asset value." Holders receive Treasury interest minus fees.

Another difference is access. USDC can be freely bought and sold on exchanges and in wallets, while BUIDL is only open to institutions that have passed verification. So BUIDL is not a "stablecoin replacement" — it is more like "on-chain institutional-grade money fund shares."

Currently, BUIDL's use cases are concentrated in institutional scenarios: serving as collateral for derivatives trading (accepted by platforms like Deribit and Crypto.com), restricted trading with market makers on Uniswap (launched in February 2026, whitelisted investors only), and as a treasury management tool that lets companies earn yield on idle cash even on weekends and holidays.

What This Means for You

If you are an ordinary individual investor, BUIDL's access restrictions prevent you from participating directly. If you see a platform claiming you can "buy BUIDL," first check whether it is selling BlackRock's native BUIDL token or some kind of wrapper or derivative. The latter differs in legal structure, redemption path, and risk exposure.

If you work at an institution and your entity meets the qualified purchaser standard, the path is to open an account and complete KYC through Securitize, with a minimum of $5 million to start. This threshold determines that BUIDL's target users are treasury management departments, family offices, and institutional trading desks — not individual wallet users.
