When a wallet cannot sign, a 'watch-only address' alone cannot pass verification. A watch-only address contains only the public key, not the private key, so it cannot sign messages or send transactions. But you can prove ownership using other methods.

A watch-only wallet only uses the public key to view on-chain information; it does not have permission to sign messages. To prove ownership, you must prove you control the private key. The following methods do not require the wallet to have traditional signing functionality.
Method 1: Cold Wallet + Watch-Only Wallet Combo Signing (No Internet, Most Secure)
If you use a cold wallet paired with a watch-only wallet, you can use the offline signing process:
- The watch-only wallet initiates the transaction and generates a dynamic QR code
- The cold wallet scans the QR code, signs the transaction offline
- The watch-only wallet then scans and broadcasts the signed transaction
The private key never touches the internet during this process. Essentially, this method lets the watch-only wallet make a request, while the cold wallet performs the actual signing, solving the problem of a watch-only wallet being 'view-only without control'.
Method 2: AOPP Protocol (One-Click Signing, No Manual Steps)
AOPP is an automated verification protocol designed specifically for self-custody wallets. It currently supports over 540 wallets, including Ledger, Trezor, MetaMask, Phantom, and Trust Wallet. It completes signature verification through the Address Ownership Proof Protocol in just a few seconds, avoiding the format mismatch issues common with manual signing.
Method 3: Satoshi Test (Micro-Transaction Verification)
If your wallet truly doesn't support any form of signing, the Satoshi test (micro-transaction verification) is a viable alternative. The exchange generates a random address and a tiny amount precise to the Satoshi (e.g., 0.0001550 BTC). You must send that exact amount from the wallet you want to verify to the given address. Once the exchange receives on-chain confirmation, verification is complete.
Important Notes
- The test transfer amount is usually non-refundable
- You must complete it within the specified time (e.g., Kraken requires 180 minutes)
- The amount must be exactly precise—do not round
Risk Warning
Do not use a 'watch-only address' to receive assets. If you send assets to a watch-only address but don't have the corresponding private key, those funds cannot be moved out. A watch-only wallet is for viewing, not for managing assets.
Common Reasons for Failure
Confusing a 'watch-only address' with a wallet that has an imported private key is the main issue. Many people think that seeing assets in a watch-only wallet means they can operate them, but a watch-only wallet can only view, not move. When verification fails, first check whether you actually hold the private key for that address.

Next Steps
First, identify your wallet type. If you use a cold wallet + watch-only wallet combo, go with Method 1 (combo signing). If your wallet supports AOPP (most mainstream wallets do), choose Method 2 for instant verification without gas fees. If the wallet truly cannot sign, use Method 3 (Satoshi test), but set aside gas fees. After verification, some platforms support providing an xpub public key to automatically recognize all future new addresses, avoiding repeated verification.
