Why Watch-Only Wallets Can Only View, Not Transfer
Your "watch-only wallet" cannot make transfers because it's essentially a read-only browser—it only stores the wallet address without holding the corresponding private key. Every blockchain transaction requires a private key signature for authorization. Without the private key, it's like having no account password: you can view the balance but cannot move the funds.

1. Confirm your wallet is indeed in "watch-only" mode
Open your wallet app and check the wallet list or the currently open wallet page. Watch-only wallets are usually clearly labeled with tags like "Read-only", "Watch", "Watch-only", or the transfer/send button is grayed out and not clickable.
If you created this wallet by entering only an address (a 42-character Ethereum address starting with 0x, a Bitcoin address starting with 1, etc.) without entering a mnemonic phrase (12 or 24 English words) or private key, then it is a watch-only wallet.
Done when: You have confirmed that the current wallet page displays "Watch-only" or "Watch", and the transfer button is disabled.
2. Determine whether this address belongs to you
Case A: The address is yours, and you have saved the mnemonic phrase or private key. You need to re-import the wallet using the mnemonic phrase or private key, not by adding an address. The correct approach: On the wallet app's home screen, select "Import Wallet" (not "Add Watch-Only Wallet"), enter your backed-up 12 or 24‑word mnemonic phrase, or paste the private key. Once imported, you will see the transfer button become available.
Case B: The address belongs to someone else, or you are not sure if you have the private key. The assets in the watch-only wallet do not belong to you—anyone can add any public address as a watch-only wallet. In this case you cannot transfer funds, and there is no way to "unlock" the money.
⚠️ Warning: If someone tells you that "sending gas fees to this watch-only wallet will activate the transfer function," it is a scam. A watch-only wallet cannot be "upgraded" to a transferable wallet in any way; any so-called "unlock" is a fraud.
Done when: You clearly know who controls this address and have taken the appropriate action.
3. If you have the private key but import fails (common reasons)
Reason 1: Incorrect network selected. The same mnemonic phrase may generate different addresses on different blockchain networks (Ethereum, BNB Chain, Polygon, etc.). If the watch-only address was added under Network A, you must import the mnemonic phrase under the same network to control the assets on that address.
Reason 2: You used "Add Watch-Only Wallet" instead of the "Import" function. You confused the two entry points: "Import Wallet" and "Add Watch-Only Wallet". Import requires entering the mnemonic phrase/private key; Add Watch-Only Wallet only requires entering the address. Check the page prompts carefully before proceeding.
Reason 3: You entered the private key for the watch-only address, but the address was generated by a hardware wallet/cold wallet. If this address was generated by a cold wallet (like Ledger, imToken cold wallet mode), the private key is stored on an offline device. You cannot enter the private key directly into a mobile app. The correct method is to use the cold wallet in conjunction with the watch-only wallet to complete the signing—the watch-only wallet initiates the transaction and generates a QR code; the cold wallet scans the QR code, signs it, and then the watch-only wallet broadcasts it to the network.
Done when: You have successfully imported the wallet using the private key or mnemonic phrase, and the transfer button is now available; or you have confirmed the address is controlled by a cold wallet and understand the pairing process.

4. Verification after completion
If you successfully imported using the mnemonic phrase/private key, try sending a small test transfer (e.g., 0.001 tokens) to verify the whole process of initiating, signing, and on-chain confirmation works.
If using a cold wallet with a watch-only wallet, first complete a test transaction to confirm the QR code scanning and signing process works. On-chain transactions can take anywhere from tens of seconds to several minutes, depending on network congestion, which varies greatly across blockchains. After a successful transaction, you can check the status by entering the transaction hash (TxID) in a block explorer.
Next steps: If import was successful, immediately check if there are assets on other chains that need to be migrated, ensuring you hold the private keys for all assets. If the address is not yours, stop all operations and do not send funds to that address.
