Hardware Wallet Locked After Wrong PIN: Can You Recover with Seed Phrase?
If your hardware wallet is locked due to wrong PIN entries, as long as you still have the seed phrase, your assets are not lost. The locked device is only the hardware, not your on-chain assets. The reset triggered by wrong PIN essentially erases the private keys stored on the device. The seed phrase is the source of your private keys; using it to restore will bring your assets back.
Prerequisites
Complete seed phrase (12/18/24 words) in the exact correct order.
The hardware wallet device itself (or a compatible new device).
Official management software (e.g. Ledger Live, Trezor Suite) and a secure computer or phone.
Common Reasons for Failure
Many people fail to restore not because the seed phrase is wrong, but because they mistake the spelling or order of words. Hardware wallet restoration requires you to confirm each word one by one, and sometimes randomly spot-check certain positions to fill in the correct order. Similar spellings (like abandon vs ability) or one wrong position will lead to recovering a completely different wallet address.
Step 1: Trigger Hardware Reset
Different devices have different PIN retry policies, but the logic is the same: actively trigger "factory reset" to enter the recovery process.
Case A: Ledger device, enter the wrong PIN 3 times consecutively, the device will auto-reset to factory state, and the welcome screen will appear.
Case B: Trezor device, you can manually select "Wipe device" in Trezor Suite, or repeatedly enter wrong PIN until the device enters Bootloader mode and resets.
Case C: OneKey device, 10 consecutive wrong PIN entries will trigger auto-reset. If you don't want to wait, you can directly use the OneKey App to perform a reset.

Step 2: Restore Wallet with Seed Phrase
After the device resets, choose the "Restore from recovery phrase" or "Recover existing wallet" option.
Select the seed phrase length (12, 18, or 24 words), must match your backup exactly.
Use the device's physical buttons to input the seed phrase word by word. On Ledger, you scroll to select the first letter, and the system auto-suggests the word; Trezor/OneKey are similar, with no copy-paste function.
Completion standard: The device shows "Recovery successful" or "Wallet ready", and the restored wallet address matches the one you backed up.
Step 3: Set a New PIN
After recovery, the device will force you to set a new PIN. Choose a 4-8 digit PIN that you will definitely remember and that has not been stored on any electronic device.
High-Risk Warning
Device reset due to wrong PIN only clears local private keys. The real asset security risk lies in whether the seed phrase has been exposed. If you performed the recovery on an internet-connected device, or are unsure if your seed phrase backup is secure, immediately transfer assets to a new wallet address generated from a new seed phrase after recovery. Once someone else obtains your seed phrase, assets can be moved instantly—it's equivalent to giving them all your private keys. Any official support or person asking for your seed phrase for any reason is a scam.
Verification After Completion
After the above steps, open your hardware wallet's official management software (e.g. Ledger Live) and click "Add account". The software will scan on-chain addresses; if the balance displays correctly, the recovery is successful.
Follow-up Actions
First, send a small test transaction (e.g. 10 USDT or 0.001 BTC) to confirm the new device can sign and send transactions normally, then handle the remaining assets. The entire recovery and verification process takes about 10-20 minutes, depending on the speed of entering the seed phrase and blockchain confirmation time.
