Should You Take a Screenshot of Your Recovery Phrase?

Why Screenshots Are Much Riskier Than Writing It Down
Many people think "I'll snap a photo and write it down later" is just a temporary measure. The problem is that once a screenshot exists, the leakage path is out of your control.
Automatic cloud photo sync: iCloud, Google Photos, Huawei Cloud, and similar services usually have photo backup turned on by default. Within seconds of taking a screenshot, it uploads to the cloud. If your cloud account gets compromised through credential stuffing or a data breach, your seed phrase is exposed in tandem.
App photo permission abuse: Many apps request access to your photo library. A malicious app can scan your gallery for seed phrase patterns and upload them. Seed phrases are drawn from a fixed list of 2,048 words, making machine recognition trivially easy.
Lost or stolen device: If your phone is lost, a lock screen password isn't absolutely secure. Attackers will often browse the photo gallery for sensitive images. A seed phrase displayed in plain text means your assets are gone.
Multiple wallet providers (Phantom, imToken, OneKey) explicitly warn: never store seed phrases via screenshots, note apps, or cloud storage.
The Correct Backup Method
Write your seed phrase down with pen and paper, or use a metal seed phrase plate for engraving. These physical media are offline, cannot transmit information between devices, and enable truly cold storage.
If you absolutely need an electronic backup as a supplement, an encrypted offline USB drive is a relatively feasible option, but a physical backup remains irreplaceable.
What to Do If You've Already Taken a Screenshot
Scenario A: You just took the screenshot, haven't saved it to the cloud or sent it to anyone.
Immediately go to your phone's photo gallery and permanently delete the image, then empty the "Recently Deleted" folder. Next, check your cloud photo recycle bin to confirm no residual copies remain.
Scenario B: The screenshot has existed for a while, or you once sent it to yourself via a messaging app.
Your seed phrase should be considered compromised. Take these actions immediately:
Create a brand-new wallet address using a new seed phrase.
Transfer all assets from the old wallet to the new address.
Abandon the old wallet and old seed phrase.
⚠️ Risk Warning: If your seed phrase screenshot is already leaked, attackers need no additional password to import your wallet and drain your funds. Revoking DApp approvals will not stop them from initiating transfers.
Prerequisite: Before transferring assets, make sure you have an asset list for the original wallet and enough balance to cover gas fees.
Common failure cause: Transferring to the wrong network — for example, sending from ETH mainnet to your new wallet's BSC address without a bridge; the assets will be lost. Verify that the network of the new wallet address matches the target transfer network.
What counts as done: The old seed phrase screenshot has been deleted from your local photo gallery, cloud sync, "Recently Deleted," and any chat logs. If assets have been moved and the new wallet is verified, never deposit funds into the old wallet again.

How to Verify Your Backup Is Correct
After completing seed phrase verification when creating your wallet, try importing the recovery phrase you just wrote down on a separate clean device. Check that the recovered wallet address matches your original address. Only after confirming it's correct should you transfer large amounts into the wallet.
