Mnemonic Correct but Recovery Fails? Check These 4 Things First
Mnemonic phrase correct but recovery fails doesn't get stuck at an "invalid" prompt. It usually gets stuck after importing when you can't see your coins, or the device doesn't match. Over 80% of these problems aren't because you wrote a word wrong – one of the four items below isn't matching. Step‑by‑step troubleshooting works much better than re‑entering the mnemonic over and over.
Prerequisites
- You're sure there's no spelling mistake (every word is in the BIP39 standard wordlist).
- You're sure the mnemonic length is correct (12, 18 or 24 words).
- The same set of mnemonic words is being used across different wallets.
Item 1: Verify the mnemonic belongs to this device
If Ledger or OneKey reports "account private key mismatch" or "device mismatch", it almost always points to the same issue: the mnemonic you restored on the current hardware device is not the one you used when creating those accounts.
What to do: If you have multiple hardware wallets or multiple mnemonic backups, recall which one you used to create the target account. If you're not sure, restore each mnemonic on the device one by one, and check the account balances in the management app after each restore. Only the correct backup will show your assets in the account list.
Completion standard: The account address shown in the hardware wallet management software (e.g. Ledger Live) matches the address you recorded when you made the backup.
Item 2: Check the derivation path (most common invisible trap)
Same mnemonic, but different wallets may generate different addresses. The reason is an inconsistent derivation path. If the mnemonic wasn't originally created in the wallet you're using now, importing it with the wallet's default path might not show your coins. Ledger's default path and Trezor's are different, for example.
What to do:
- Case A: You created the account in wallet A (e.g. MetaMask), and you use the same mnemonic to restore in wallet B (e.g. imToken) but can't see your assets – go back to wallet A, check its derivation path, then in wallet B choose "custom path" when importing and enter A's path.
- Case B: Restoring a software wallet's mnemonic on a hardware wallet, or the other way around – find out which path standards each side supports. If you're unsure about the path, try common paths one by one on the recovery screen (e.g. BIP44, BIP49, BIP84).
Completion standard: The address generated after recovery is exactly the same as the address you used before.
Item 3: Make sure the mnemonic hasn't been processed a second time
There's a scenario: the backup you have isn't the original word order – it's a shuffled version. Some BIP39 mnemonic shuffling tools scramble the order with a secret key, so entering the shuffled order directly is invalid.
What to do: Think back to whether you did any extra step when you made the backup (e.g. rearranged the words yourself, or used a mnemonic encryption/shuffling tool). If you did, you need to use that tool's recovery process to restore the original order, then enter that into the hardware wallet.
Completion standard: What you enter into the hardware wallet is the original BIP39 mnemonic sequence.
Item 4: Check whether you set a passphrase (the 25th word)
Both Ledger and Trezor support a "passphrase" feature – it's like adding a custom word or sentence on top of the mnemonic. If you set a passphrase, restoring just the mnemonic will generate a completely different set of addresses.
What to do: Go into the hardware wallet settings, find the "passphrase" option, enter the word you set at the time, and then add the account again. If you've forgotten the passphrase, the assets cannot be recovered using the mnemonic alone.
Completion standard: After turning on the passphrase, your original wallet address with your assets appears in the account list.
Risk reminder
If you've checked all four items and still can't recover, the most likely reason is that the mnemonic backup itself is wrong. You should immediately move your assets to a secure third‑party account (e.g. an exchange), reset the device to generate a brand‑new mnemonic, and transfer the assets back to the new account. Do not repeatedly try different mnemonic combinations on an internet‑connected device – every entry is an exposure risk. If malware captures it, your assets could go to zero instantly. Official staff will never ask you for your mnemonic under any circumstances.
How to verify everything is done
After a successful recovery, use the hardware wallet to sign and send a small transaction (0.001 BTC or 10 USDT) to confirm that both signing and broadcasting work normally. Just looking at the balance isn't enough – being able to send out proves that the private key matches completely.
