The core rule for transferring coins from an exchange to a cold wallet is simple: the network name must match exactly, character for character. It's not about whether the transfer can "go through." The worst outcome of picking the wrong network isn't just losing the fee — it's your funds disappearing from the blockchain entirely. USDT is a classic example. On the Binance withdrawal page, you'll see three options: TRC-20, ERC-20, and BEP-20. If your cold wallet only supports Ethereum (ERC-20) and you pick TRC-20, your USDT ends up on the Tron blockchain. Your wallet won't be able to read it at all.
Step 1: Find Out Which Networks Your Cold Wallet Supports
Not all cold wallets support every network. Before doing anything, figure out which blockchain your wallet can receive coins on.
What to do: Open your cold wallet's companion app (such as Ledger Live or Trezor Suite), pick the coin you want to receive, and go to the deposit or receive page. The app will show you which network that coin uses in your wallet.
For Ledger, the rule is clear: BTC uses the Bitcoin network, ETH uses the ERC-20 network, and BNB uses the BEP-20 network.
If your wallet doesn't support a certain chain (for example, some older hardware wallets don't support Solana), then you cannot select that network option on Binance.
Goal: Know exactly which chain your target coin runs on inside your cold wallet — for instance, "My Ledger receives USDT on the ERC-20 network."
Step 2: Match the Network Exactly on the Binance Withdrawal Page
What to do:
After selecting the coin on the Binance withdrawal page, a network dropdown menu will appear.
Find the network name that matches exactly what you confirmed in Step 1.
Don't just go by icons or abbreviations — look at the full name. For example, both ERC-20 and BEP-20 can handle USDT, but they are completely different blockchains.
Goal: The network you pick on Binance must match exactly the one your cold wallet uses. If your wallet uses ERC-20, then on Binance you also pick ERC-20. Do not pick any network other than "Ethereum" in this case.
High-risk warning: The same asset exists independently on different blockchains. If you withdraw using the TRC-20 network, your USDT lives on the Tron blockchain. Only a wallet that can sign with Tron private keys can access it. If your cold wallet doesn't support Tron, it's like putting money in a safe with no door. According to Binance's official support guide, once a withdrawal is complete and the network was wrong, the platform cannot help you recover the funds.
Step 3: Pick the Best Network Based on the Coin and Amount
If your cold wallet supports multiple networks (for example, USDT works on both ERC-20 and TRC-20), only then should you think about fees and speed.
Case A: You're withdrawing BTC — Use the Bitcoin network directly. Don't pick a BEP-20 or ERC-20 version of BTC (if available). Those are cross-chain wrapped assets your cold wallet may not recognize.
Case B: You're withdrawing USDT — If your cold wallet supports ERC-20, TRC-20, and BEP-20, choose based on these guidelines:
TRC-20: Lowest fee (usually around 1 USDT), fast arrival (1–3 minutes). Works well for most users.
BEP-20: Also low fee (around 0.02–0.1 USDT), very fast. Best if you're staying within the Binance ecosystem.
ERC-20: Highest fee (can be 3–20 USDT). Only use this if you must interact with Ethereum DeFi or specifically need this network. Not recommended otherwise.
Common mistake: Many people pick TRC-20 to save on fees, only to realize their cold wallet never had the Tron network added. They saved 1 dollar in fees but lost the entire principal. Fee rankings can never replace a network compatibility check.
How to verify everything is correct: After the withdrawal is submitted, copy the TxID generated by Binance. Look it up on the matching blockchain explorer (e.g., Tronscan for TRC-20, Etherscan for ERC-20) to check the number of confirmations. Once enough confirmations are reached, open your cold wallet app and check the balance. If 24 hours pass and nothing shows up, contact Binance customer support with your withdrawal order number and TxID for troubleshooting.
