Setting Stop-Loss in Hedge Mode: Why It Is Easy to Pick the Wrong Buy or Sell Direction

 /
2

A trader originally held a long position and wanted to set a stop-loss to protect it. But after the order was triggered, it opened a new short position instead. The position became hedged immediately. The reason was simple: in the stop-loss order, the direction field was mistakenly set to "Sell to Open Short."

Core point: In hedge mode, the system cannot tell whether you want to close a long or open a short

In one-way mode, your position direction is unique: if you have a long, you do not have a short. If you have a short, you do not have a long. The system knows you can only close the position.

But hedge mode allows you to hold a long position and a short position at the same time. This creates a problem: when your stop-loss is triggered, the system does not know whether you want to close the long position or open a new short position.

So you need to make the direction of the stop-loss order clear by yourself:

  • Sell to Close Long: a stop-loss for a long position, used to close the long position.

  • Sell to Open Short: opens a short position.

On the interface, these two options may differ by only one word, but the results are completely different. If you choose "Sell to Open Short" by mistake, you are manually placing a conditional order that opens a position in the opposite direction.

Step 1: Check whether your account mode is hedge mode

[What to do]: Look at your contract account settings and confirm which mode you are currently in.

[How to do it]: Open the contract trading page and find the "Position Mode" or "Contract Mode" setting. The location varies by platform. It is usually at the top of the trading interface or in the settings menu.

  • Case A: It shows "One-Way Mode"

    • You can only hold a position in one direction. If you select "Sell" in a stop-loss order, it means closing a long by default. If you select "Buy," it means closing a short by default. This is less confusing and is not the case discussed in this article.

  • Case B: It shows "Hedge Mode"

    • You can hold both long and short positions at the same time. You need to decide yourself whether the stop-loss direction is for closing a position or opening a position. This is where the problem happens.

[Completion standard]: You can clearly see the current mode name in the account settings or at the top of the trading interface. Most mainstream trading platforms support switching between the two modes.

Step 2: When setting a stop-loss, carefully check the direction field

[What to do]: When placing a stop-loss order, confirm the "Direction" or "Action" field word by word in the order panel.

[How to do it]:

  1. Open the "Plan Order" or "Stop-Loss/Take-Profit" order panel.

  2. Find the "Direction" or "Action" dropdown menu. This is the easiest place to make a mistake.

  3. If you are holding a long position and want to set a stop-loss:

    • ✅ Correct choice: Sell to Close Long or Close Long

    • ❌ Wrong choice: Sell to Open Short or Open Short

  4. If you are holding a short position and want to set a stop-loss:

    • ✅ Correct choice: Buy to Close Short or Close Short

    • ❌ Wrong choice: Buy to Open Long or Open Long

[Completion standard]: On the order details page, confirm that the "Direction" matches your current position direction. If you hold a long position, the stop-loss direction should be "Close Long," not "Open Short."

Step 3: Why is it easy to pick the wrong direction? Because "Close" and "Open" look too similar

In many cases, it is not that you do not know how to choose. It is that the order interface design makes it easy to misread.

Common reason 1: The default option is "Open"

On some platforms, the default direction in the plan order panel is automatically set to "Open." If you forget to manually change it to "Close," the stop-loss order will open a new position in the opposite direction after it is triggered.

Common reason 2: The dropdown menu options are too close together

"Sell to Close Long" and "Sell to Open Short" are listed next to each other. They differ by only one word, so it is easy to click the wrong one when you are moving quickly.

Common reason 3: Special rules in hedge mode

On some platforms, if a stop-loss price is below the market price for a long position, the system may treat it as a "take-profit" order instead of a "stop-loss" order. This is part of the platform's underlying logic and is hard for ordinary users to notice. If the result of a triggered stop-loss order is the opposite of what you expected, besides checking the direction, you should also check whether the platform mistakenly treated your stop-loss as a take-profit.

High-risk reminder: If you already have a position and mistakenly use a stop-loss order with an "Open" direction, you will end up holding two positions in opposite directions after it is triggered. This is not locking the position. It is double risk. Your margin is occupied by both positions at the same time, your account equity is locked up, and later decisions about closing positions become much more complicated.

How should hedge mode actually be used?

Hedge mode itself is not a monster. It is suitable for these scenarios:

  • You want to hedge the risk exposure of spot and futures at the same time.

  • You are doing cross-period arbitrage or spot-futures arbitrage.

  • You need to set different take-profit and stop-loss strategies in two directions separately.

But for ordinary users who only use stop-loss orders to protect a one-sided position, one-way mode is less error-prone. In one direction, there is only one position. The system will not ask you to choose between "Close" and "Open," which naturally reduces the chance of mistakes.

FAQ

Question: I accidentally chose the wrong direction in hedge mode and it triggered an opposite position. What should I do? Answer: Go to the "Positions" page immediately. Find the newly opened position in the opposite direction and click "Market Close" to clear it. At the same time, check whether the old stop-loss order is still in "Open Orders." If it is still there, cancel it too. Then re-evaluate your actual position situation.

Question: Do all platforms have this problem in hedge mode? Answer: Yes. As long as it is hedge mode, the platform allows you to hold long and short positions at the same time. The system cannot automatically determine whether your stop-loss is meant to close a position or open a new position. The choice is given to the user, which means the chance of error is also given to the user.

Question: Can I keep hedge mode on but only use a one-sided position? Answer: Yes. But the risk is that if you accidentally choose "Open Short" while holding a long position, the system will not block it because it is a legal operation in hedge mode. So if you do not need to hold long and short at the same time, it is recommended to switch back to "One-Way Mode."
