CKB's core use can be summed up in one sentence: It is a direct ownership proof for on-chain storage space on the Nervos network, 1 CKB corresponds to 1 byte of on-chain state storage right. When you hold CKB, you do not hold an abstract "token", but a piece of writable data space. This design determines all its unique features in issuance and adoption: it needs continuous payment for "storage", instead of relying only on transaction fees to compensate miners like Bitcoin.

Storage: CKB's most fundamental and easily overlooked use case
On Nervos, anything that exists on-chain must occupy space. A Cell (the basic data unit of CKB) takes up a certain number of bytes, and you need to lock the exact same amount of CKB as the number of bytes. If you want to store 100 bytes of data, you have to lock 100 CKB. As long as the data stays on the chain, these CKB stay locked and cannot be used for other purposes; only when the data is consumed or deleted, the corresponding CKB is released.
This leads to a different conclusion from most public chains: CKB's demand does not come from "frequent transfers", but from "users storing data on the chain". Asset issuance, NFTs, on-chain identities, and even smart contract states, as long as they need to be persisted, take up space and lock CKB. Official documents call this mechanism State Rent, and clarify that it is not a one-time payment, but a continuous cost by letting locked CKB bear inflation losses. In other words, when you occupy storage space, the purchasing power of your CKB is slowly diluted, which is the price you pay to miners for keeping your data safe.
If you just keep CKB in your wallet without using it to occupy on-chain storage space, you can lock it via Nervos DAO to offset this inflation. The official description of DAO is: Lock CKB to get compensation proportional to the secondary issuance inflation, so long-term holders get a monetary policy experience close to Bitcoin's deflationary design. But if you use CKB to store data, you cannot put it into the DAO at the same time, because the CKB occupied by storage is already locked.
Issuance: Two separate lines, one for miners, one to price "storage"
CKB's issuance is divided into base issuance and secondary issuance, with different purposes for both.
Base issuance is similar to Bitcoin, with a total of 33.6 billion CKB, halving every 4 years, all distributed to miners. The first halving happened in November 2023, and the next one is expected in November 2027. This part acts as security subsidy in the early stage of the network launch.
Secondary issuance is unique to CKB, with a fixed annual additional issuance of 13.44 billion CKB and no halving mechanism. This newly issued CKB is not evenly distributed to everyone, but flows to three directions: miners (as compensation for state rent), Nervos DAO lockers, and the treasury (currently being destroyed before the ecological fund is exhausted). The key point is, if you hold CKB but do not put it in DAO and do not use it for storage, the secondary issuance inflation will dilute your share; if you put it in DAO, the compensation will offset the dilution; if you use it for storage, you are already "consuming" this part of new issuance in another way.
The intention of this design is to tie CKB's issuance to "the growth of on-chain state", not to "transaction volume". Even if the transaction volume is extremely high, if no one stores data, miners can only get a limited share from secondary issuance; on the contrary, the higher the on-chain storage occupation, the more CKB miners get from secondary issuance, so the network security incentive grows along with the value of stored data.
Adoption: Technically moving closer to Bitcoin, but real usage tells a different story
Nervos's current clearest public strategic positioning is to build itself as Bitcoin's programmable layer, with core tools being the RGB++ protocol and Fiber payment network. RGB++ enables isomorphic binding between Bitcoin UTXOs and CKB Cells, allowing assets to flow between the two chains without relying on traditional cross-chain bridges. Fiber is a payment channel solution similar to Lightning Network. The Fiber Studio v1.1.0 released in August 2026 already supports atomic swaps with Bitcoin Lightning Network via cross-chain Hub, but related reports note that this feature is still limited to testnet at present, and no large-scale adoption has been observed.
Ecosystem projects listed in official documents include the Neuron desktop wallet, browser extension wallets that support CKB and RGB++ assets, and mining pools. The xUDT standard provides an expandable token solution similar to ERC-20, allowing users to attach extended scripts to tokens for compliance or behavior constraints. These are all progresses at the infrastructure level.
But adoption data needs to be viewed separately. The RGB++ data (400+ dApps, 660,000 addresses as of July 2025) mentioned in third-party analysis comes from a price prediction article by MEXC, not official disclosure, and it has been more than a year since that date. A KuCoin research report points out that CKB's market cap has long stayed in the range of 40 million to 70 million US dollars, and its price is about 97% lower than its 2021 peak. Putting these two sets of information together, we can outline CKB's current status: It has a clear technical narrative, but its on-chain usage and market recognition have not caught up yet.
How to judge if CKB is relevant to you
If you are looking for a chain for data storage: CKB's storage model is worth learning about, but you need to accept a premise — long-term data storage has continuous costs (the opportunity cost of locked CKB plus inflation dilution). If you plan to store data for several years or longer, calculate clearly how much CKB you need to lock, how much DAO compensation you will lose by not putting that CKB in Nervos DAO, then decide if it is worth it.
If you are paying attention to asset issuance in the Bitcoin ecosystem: RGB++ is the most noteworthy protocol on CKB, and its isomorphic binding idea is different from bridge-based solutions. But you need to verify by yourself what real assets are being issued and traded on RGB++, instead of only looking at the "RGB++ supported" label. The projects listed on the official ecosystem page are mostly wallets and tools, you need to check on the blockchain explorer or community to confirm the activity of the asset side.
If you are just a CKB holder: CKB's value logic does not come from "more users", but from "more data stored on chain". If on-chain storage demand does not rise, the combination of base issuance halving and secondary issuance inflation will have a complex impact on price — halving reduces new selling pressure, but secondary issuance continues to exist, and DAO compensation offsets the dilution for holders. This is not a simple "halving equals bullish" asset.
If you are evaluating Nervos's Bitcoin L2 narrative: Fiber's Bitcoin Lightning swap is currently a testnet feature, and there is no official updated data on RGB++ real adoption. The narrative itself has technical basis, but there is insufficient evidence to price it as a "fully launched and demand-generating" product.
