Nano's zero fees are not a marketing slogan. They are a direct result of its ledger structure: each transaction only updates the sender's and receiver's own account chains. There are no miners or validators who need to be paid to package transactions. The trade-off is that the network must resist spam in another way. Otherwise, zero cost means unlimited tiny transfers could easily flood nodes. Nano's solution is "proof of work as an anti-spam tax" plus "priority sorting," instead of charging fees.

Where Zero Fees Come From: No Middleman Taking a Cut
On traditional blockchains, fees are paid to miners or validators who package blocks. In Nano's Block Lattice structure, each account has its own chain. A transaction is a single block signed and broadcast by the account owner. There is no "block producer" role, so no one needs to earn income from transaction fees. Representatives are responsible for voting to confirm transactions, but representatives do not earn transaction fees. Their motivation comes from the indirect benefit of keeping the network healthy, not from taking a direct cut.
This means if you send 1 XNO, the recipient gets 1 XNO. At the protocol level, there is no gas, no miner fee, and no priority bidding fee. However, it is important to understand: the network not charging fees does not mean the platform you use does not charge fees. Exchange withdrawals and some custodial wallets may set their own withdrawal fees. That is a platform policy, not a fee charged by the Nano protocol.
Anti-Spam Mechanism: No Fee, but a "Computation Tax"
If transactions were completely free, an attacker could flood nodes with a huge number of tiny transactions. Nano's response is that every transaction must include a small proof of work (PoW). The sender needs to spend computing resources to find a nonce that meets a difficulty threshold. Nodes only need one hash to verify this proof, but generating it takes tens of millions of attempts on average. In essence, this uses computation time instead of money cost to create an entry barrier. For normal users, a phone or desktop wallet can finish the calculation in a few seconds in the background. For an attacker trying to push millions of transactions, the accumulated computing load and electricity cost quickly become uneconomical.
PoW alone is not enough, because different accounts have different computing power. Nano introduces priority sorting: nodes sort queued transactions by the PoW difficulty attached to each transaction, and higher-difficulty transactions are processed first. At the same time, account balance is also considered. Accounts with larger balances have a higher base priority during congestion, but the number of transactions per account within a specific time window is also limited to prevent one large account from monopolizing the network. If a normal user's transaction is stuck because of network congestion, nodes trigger dynamic PoW, automatically raising the difficulty threshold and regenerating the proof so the transaction jumps ahead in the queue.
The effect of this mechanism is that zero fees have not caused the network to be paralyzed by spam transactions. But the trade-off is that during congestion, transaction confirmation is no longer strictly "instant". Under normal conditions, confirmation takes under 1 second. When the network is busy, lower-priority transactions may need to wait.
What You Will Encounter in Real Payments
Paying with XNO is no different from a normal transfer: enter the recipient address and amount, then confirm. The wallet automatically handles the PoW calculation, usually in the background. You do not need to "mine" manually. After the transaction is broadcast, the receiver needs to publish a receive block on their own account chain for the funds to be credited. Most modern wallets complete the receiving step automatically, so the balance you see updates normally.
One detail unrelated to fees but affecting experience: XNO transfers between exchanges may still have a cost. Gate once integrated XNO with a withdrawal fee of 0.055 XNO. That was not charged by the Nano network, but by the exchange's operating costs. If you use centralized platforms to send or receive XNO, check the platform's withdrawal fee first. Do not assume that "Nano has zero fees" means "every step has zero cost."
Also, Nano's smallest unit is 1 raw (1 XNO = 10^30 raw). The protocol has no minimum transfer amount, so in theory you can send extremely small amounts. But that does not mean sending tiny amounts is free. The PoW computation cost stays the same. Sending 0.000001 XNO and sending 100 XNO require the same amount of computation. From an economic perspective, zero fees are most suitable for payments where the amount is meaningful relative to the computation cost, not for endlessly split micropayments.
My View: Who It Suits and Who It Does Not
If you need small, frequent, fee-sensitive transfers, such as tipping content creators, sending a small amount to family overseas, or buying a coffee at a merchant that supports XNO, Nano's design fits. You do not need to pay an extra fee that might be higher than the transfer amount itself.
If you want absolutely instant final confirmation and cannot accept possible waiting during congestion, be careful. Nano's under-1-second confirmation is the normal performance, not a hard protocol-level guarantee for every transaction. The priority mechanism means that under network pressure, the transaction experience will be split into different levels.
If you are just holding XNO waiting for its price to rise, zero fees and the anti-spam mechanism are of limited help to your holding decision. Nano is positioned as a payment tool, not a yield-bearing asset or governance token. Its value depends on how many people are willing to use it to transfer value.
