Bitcoin's total network hashrate has been falling for a week, but when you open your mining software, the difficulty number has not moved at all. You may start to wonder: is this mechanism just too slow to react?

Actually, this is not slow reaction. Bitcoin was simply not designed to respond to hashrate changes in real time. It is like a huge ship that needs to calculate its turn well in advance. The two-week adjustment period is a fixed rhythm written into the code by Satoshi Nakamoto. It gives the decentralized network enough time to accurately measure real hashrate changes, instead of being pushed off course by a short-term gust of wind.
Why does it have to wait two weeks
The Bitcoin network only adjusts mining difficulty once every 2016 blocks. Since each block is theoretically produced every 10 minutes, this works out to about two weeks. There are two key reasons for this.
First, it is meant to correct without overcorrecting. A total of 2016 blocks creates a large enough statistical sample. If difficulty were adjusted based on just a few minutes of hashrate fluctuation, random factors such as luck or network delay could make difficulty jump up and down, making the network less stable. Two weeks of data allows the adjustment to reflect the real upward or downward trend in total network hashrate, rather than short-term luck.
Second, this is Bitcoin's self-correcting rule. The difficulty adjustment is a mathematical formula written into the protocol. Every node calculates it independently at the same block height, and the result must be identical. Otherwise, the block will not be accepted. The adjustment formula is: New Difficulty = Old Difficulty × (Actual time taken for the previous 2016 blocks / 20160 minutes). It only cares how long the previous cycle took, not what your hashrate is at this exact second.
What would happen without the two-week wait
If difficulty could be adjusted in real time, block times would become extremely unstable. When hashrate suddenly rose, difficulty would immediately follow. When hashrate dropped a little, difficulty would immediately fall back. This would disrupt the rhythm of block production, make halving times arrive earlier or later, and throw off Bitcoin's entire issuance schedule.
Bitcoin is not trying to make every minute exactly the same. Instead, it aims for a long-term average of one block every 10 minutes. The two-week cycle is the balance point between violent hashrate swings and maintaining a stable issuance schedule.

So what happens after the hashrate drops
When total network hashrate falls, block production slows down, and the network will "feel" that block times are exceeding 10 minutes. But this "feeling" process has to last a full two weeks, or 2016 blocks, before it is settled once.
When the two-week cycle ends, the system calculates the result. If it finds that the total time exceeded the target, it will automatically lower the difficulty. This makes mining easier for the remaining miners, restores their profitability, and brings the network back to the pace of one block every 10 minutes.

The two major swings in 2026 are living examples. Early in the year, winter storms caused large-scale power outages in Texas. After the hashrate plunged, the network did not react immediately. Instead, around two weeks later on February 7, it completed a one-time difficulty reduction of 11.16%. Similarly, in June, hashrate was lost as miners shifted toward AI. The network again made a difficulty reduction of 9.91% only at the end of the cycle.
How to check the next adjustment: If you want to verify whether the next difficulty adjustment will happen, you can visit a block explorer such as mempool.space or BTC.com and look at the "Next Difficulty Adjustment" countdown. When it turns negative and shows a new difficulty value, that means the adjustment has taken effect. This process still takes a few days, and there is no point in rushing it.
