EURC is a euro stablecoin issued by Circle. Each token corresponds to 1 euro and is 100% backed by euro reserves held at regulated financial institutions in Europe. It shares the same issuance framework as USDC, except it is pegged to the euro rather than the US dollar. For users who hold euros and need to transfer or trade on-chain, EURC offers a more direct euro-denominated tool than USDT or USDC, without needing to convert to dollars first and then back again.

How the Euro Peg Is Maintained
The core mechanism behind the peg is "full reserves + minting and redemption." When a qualified institution deposits euros into Circle's reserve account, Circle mints an equivalent amount of EURC on-chain. When EURC is redeemed, the tokens are burned and the corresponding euros are withdrawn from the reserves. The reserves are attested monthly by Deloitte, with reports published on Circle's transparency page.
Reserve assets consist primarily of euro-denominated cash and short-term instruments. MiCA has clear requirements for electronic money tokens (EMTs): at least 30% of reserves must be held in local currency deposits at EU credit institutions, reserve accounts must be segregated from Circle's own funds, and creditors cannot access these reserves if Circle goes bankrupt. Circle's French entity holds an electronic money institution license issued by the ACPR, and EURC is a compliant EMT under the MiCA framework.
Redemption Paths: Exchange vs. Directly with Circle
Redeeming through an exchange is the fastest path. EURC is listed on major exchanges including Coinbase, Kraken, Bitpanda, Bitstamp, and Bybit. You can sell EURC directly for euros or other assets. This path does not require you to be a European resident or have a Circle account, but exchange rates and fees are determined by the exchange and may deviate from the 1:1 peg.
Redeeming directly through Circle is a holder's right under MiCA. Circle commits to redeeming at face value of 1 EURC = 1 euro. However, this path has prerequisites:
You must complete KYC/AML verification and provide proof of identity and address
You must have a bank account in the European Economic Area (EEA) that can receive SEPA transfers
Redemption requests are executed only after transaction monitoring and sanctions screening
Circle's redemption policy states that retail holder redemptions "should not exceed 5 business days," unless inconsistencies are found during the process. If your bank account is not in the EEA, or you cannot provide SEPA receiving information, the direct redemption path will not work, and you will need to sell through an exchange instead.
For institutional users, Circle Mint accounts allow minting and redeeming EURC at face value in bulk. Circle Mint is currently open only to institutions, not individuals.
Exchange Rate Risk: Pegged Does Not Mean Zero Risk
EURC is pegged to the euro, not the US dollar. If you use dollars or another currency when depositing fiat, the EUR/USD exchange rate fluctuations between buying and selling will directly affect your profit or loss. EURC maintains stability against the euro, but it does not guarantee price stability against the dollar or other currencies.
Academic research provides two notable data points. A study of euro stablecoins from April 2023 to January 2026 found that during MiCA-related regulatory information shocks, EURC experienced an average discount of about 58 basis points, although prices eventually returned to the peg. A report from the Bank of Korea noted that EURC and EURT experienced price deviations of ±1% on 55 and 257 occasions respectively over a three-year observation period, with higher volatility than dollar stablecoins, partly due to shallower liquidity (EURC's circulating supply is about 0.3% of USDC's).
Most of these deviations are short-lived, but they mean that during extreme market conditions or liquidity drying up, the ability to redeem at face value may be temporarily affected. If you hold a large amount, exiting in batches through multiple exchanges or channels is less likely to encounter slippage than selling all at once.
Another thing to note is EURC's circulating supply. As of 2026, EURC's circulating supply exceeds 400 million euros, making it the largest euro stablecoin. But compared to the tens of billions in USDC and USDT, EURC's depth in on-chain DeFi protocols remains limited. When making large EURC/USDC swaps on AMMs like Uniswap, slippage can be significantly higher than with dollar stablecoin pairs.
Choosing Between EURC and USDC
If you need a euro-denominated, compliant, redeemable on-chain asset, EURC is one of the few options that meets these criteria. MiCA compliance means it is more likely to be accepted on regulated exchanges and payment scenarios in the EU. Visa and Mastercard have both incorporated EURC into their euro stablecoin settlement capabilities.
If your main use case is providing liquidity or borrowing in DeFi, USDC's pool depth and number of available protocols still far exceed EURC's. In this case, using USDC as your operating medium and only converting to EURC when you need euro exposure is a more practical approach. EURC solves the problem of "putting euros on-chain," not "replacing USDC as a universal collateral."
