How to Use sdCRV on Stake DAO? Yield, Voting, and Exit

 /
3

The core tension of sdCRV is that it trades "liquidity" for permanent disposal rights over your CRV. The moment you deposit CRV and receive sdCRV, you can no longer redeem CRV through Stake DAO. You can only sell sdCRV on secondary markets like Curve at the market price. Your voting rights remain, your yield remains, but the meaning of "exit" changes—you are not exiting a lock-up, you are selling a position.

What Actually Happens After Depositing CRV

The Liquid Locker permanently locks the CRV deposited by users, converts it into veCRV, and then issues sdCRV to depositors at a 1:1 ratio. The veCRV controlled by Stake DAO is continuously re-locked to maintain maximum lock yield and voting power.

sdCRV itself is an ERC-20 token. You can stake it in Stake DAO's gauge to earn protocol yield and platform fees, or you can provide liquidity in Curve's sdCRV/CRV pool.

The key rule is written on Stake DAO's CRV Locker page, highlighted in bold: Converting CRV to sdCRV is irreversible. You can stake and unstake sdCRV, but you cannot swap it back to CRV through the protocol.

Where Does the Yield Come From

sdCRV's yield is made up of several stacked components, not a fixed rate:

  • Curve protocol base rewards: Stake DAO applies veCRV boost to its own controlled strategies, and sdCRV stakers share this yield.
  • Platform fees: Stake DAO receives crvUSD allocated by Curve from its controlled ~15% veCRV share, and part of it flows to sdCRV depositors.
  • Vote Incentives: sdCRV holders have influence over Curve gauge voting directions, and projects pay for these votes. These incentives are distributed every two weeks. If delegated to Stake DAO for automatic voting, they are distributed directly to depositors.

According to third-party data, the staking APY for sdCRV on Ethereum floats roughly in the 11%–17% range. Defi Llama shows a 30-day average APY of about 19.84%, currently 17.33%; DIA Data records 13.50%. These numbers vary with CRV price, voting market activity, and Curve allocation volume—they are not locked rates.

vlSDT can amplify voting power. By holding and staking SDT to get vlSDT, your sdCRV voting power can be boosted from the base level (equivalent to 2-year veCRV) to a higher multiplier according to a formula.

How to Vote

sdCRV holders participate in governance voting for underlying protocols like Curve through the Meta Governance page.

The process is: find active Curve proposals in the Meta Governance section of the Stake DAO app → review the proposal description and options → allocate voting weight to different options → click Vote and sign. Your voting intent is recorded, and when the underlying protocol vote deadline arrives, the Liquid Locker casts the corresponding veCRV votes according to the proportion of sdCRV holder preferences.

If you don't want to manually track every proposal, you can choose to delegate to Stake DAO. The protocol will vote automatically and optimize incentive collection, with voting rewards distributed to you every two weeks. The cost of delegation is that you give up control over specific proposal directions in exchange for automation.

Exit: What You Can and Cannot Do

What you cannot do: Swap sdCRV back to CRV through Stake DAO. This function does not exist at the protocol level.

What you can do: Sell sdCRV on the secondary market. There is an sdCRV/CRV pool on Curve where you can swap sdCRV for CRV or other assets.

Here is a data point you must check in advance: the exchange rate of sdCRV to CRV is usually below 1:1. Captured data shows that 1 sdCRV is approximately equal to 0.5121 CRV, meaning sdCRV trades at a significant discount relative to CRV. This discount reflects the market's pricing of "liquidity" versus "permanent locking"—you can sell at any time, but the selling price is discounted.

sdCRV staked in the gauge must first be unstaked before it can be moved to the secondary market for trading. Stake DAO's official documentation confirms that stake and unstake operations are reversible; the restriction only exists in the CRV ↔ sdCRV conversion step.

Two Things to Check in Advance

First, what is the current exchange rate between sdCRV and CRV. Check the current market price on Curve's sdCRV/CRV pool or GeckoTerminal. If you cannot accept a significant discount on exit, do not deposit CRV.

Second, Stake DAO has experienced an sdCRV-related incident. On May 27, 2026, a pool containing vsdCRV was attacked, and the Oracle price was manipulated, causing some borrowers in the asdCRV LlamaLend market on Arbitrum to be incorrectly liquidated. Stake DAO approved a compensation of 1,535,421.76 sdCRV through a governance proposal, mainly targeting affected liquidity providers, later extended to some borrowers on Arbitrum. This event does not directly indicate a flaw in the sdCRV mechanism, but it reminds you: derivatives in the Liquid Locker ecosystem (asdCRV, vsdCRV) add additional contract risk.

If you just want CRV governance rights and some yield while retaining the possibility of exiting at any time, sdCRV is one path. But you must accept two costs: the exit price is determined by the market and is usually below CRV face value; and the deposit action itself has no turning back.
