How to Track Runes Protocol Holdings and Capital Flows On-Chain
The core approach to tracking Runes is: use block explorers to find the top holder addresses of major Runes, then analyze these addresses' full holdings and transfer records with specialized tracking tools, and finally add addresses identified as "smart money" to a monitoring list for ongoing tracking. The key is not to rely on just one tool, but to combine three categories: explorers, trackers, and data dashboards.
1. Find Smart Money Wallet Addresses
Goal: Find whale wallets worth tracking from the top Rune projects' holder addresses.
How to do it:
Open the OKX Web3 wallet's Runes marketplace or the UniSat marketplace, and check the top 10 Rune projects by market cap.
Filter out abnormal projects – such as FEHU with an excessively high pre-mine ratio (99% pre-mined) or RSIC·GENESIS·RUNE that was fully distributed via airdrop.
Enter the page of the target Rune project, and look at the top 10 holding addresses in the data analysis section (excluding project team pre-mine addresses and exchange hot wallets).
Copy these addresses. You can also use UniScan (uniscan.cc) to directly search any Bitcoin address and view its Runes, Ordinals, and BRC-20 assets.
When is this step done?: You have copied 5–10 whale holding addresses from top Rune projects and are ready for in-depth analysis.
Large holders ≠ smart money. Some whales may be the project team itself, or they might be losing money. You need to further filter them through step 2.
2. Analyze Address Holdings and Trading Behavior
Goal: Use specialized tracking tools to check the target address's full Rune holdings, sources, and destinations.
How to do it:
Open RuneAlpha and paste the whale address copied from step 1 into the search bar on the homepage.
View the detailed list of all Runes held by that address, including:
Source of holdings: an arrow pointing inward indicates where it was bought/transferred from
Mint records: a + sign indicates that the address obtained Runes by minting itself
Sell records: an arrow pointing outward indicates that a portion of holdings was sold
Clicking the transaction hash will redirect you to the detailed transaction information
Use RuneData.io or RunesMarketCap to additionally check the Rune's market cap, FDV, minting time, and price trends.
Judgment criteria:
If the address mainly mints: it indicates a new-project hunter; observe which new Runes it mints next
If the address mainly buys on the secondary market: it indicates forward-looking judgment and is more worth tracking
Check profitability: addresses with proven profit records (e.g., some made 6x profit in 36 hours) should be prioritized
When is this step done?: You have filtered out 3–5 "smart money" addresses with clear profit records and rational trading logic.
Prerequisite: You have already obtained a batch of potential smart money addresses (step 1).
3. Add Smart Money Addresses to a Watchlist
Goal: Use monitoring tools to continuously track the real-time activity of these addresses.
How to do it:
Open GeniiData or RuneAlpha and input the filtered smart money addresses.
Click the star icon to add the address to your Watchlist.
In the Watchlist, view the total number of mint and transfer transactions of all watched addresses in the last 24 hours.
You can also use Rune.mine for wallet monitoring – it can track the current value and dynamics of the Runes you hold, similar to Zerion.
When is this step done?: Addresses are successfully added to the Watchlist, and you can receive 24-hour activity summaries.
Common reasons for failure:
Focusing on only a single time window: Just because an address made money in the past does not mean it will make money next. Observe across multiple timeframes: 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days.
Not identifying project team addresses: Pre-mine addresses differ from regular whales. Projects with an excessively high pre-mine ratio (e.g., a single address holding >5%) pose a risk of whales dumping.
Ignoring Twitter popularity verification: After finding a new project that smart money is buying, search the project name on LunarCrush (replace "·" with a space), and check the trend of topic popularity and engagement ranking to help determine if the project has community support.
Risk reminders:
Unstable Bitcoin gas fees: The confirmation time for Runes transactions and mints is highly dependent on the gas set. Before submitting a transaction, check the current gas via mempool and set an appropriate fee rate; otherwise, the transaction might remain unconfirmed for hours.
Price differences across trading markets: There may be price differences between major Runes marketplaces like OKX and UniSat. Compare prices before trading.
Ticker squatting issues: The Runes protocol currently has no mechanism to prevent early users from occupying popular token tickers, leading to ticker squatting, which impacts project identification.
4. Cross-validate with Macro Data on Dune
Goal: Use public dashboards on Dune Analytics to check the overall Runes transaction trends and determine whether the smart money's moves align with the broader market.
How to do it:
Visit Dune Analytics and search for dashboards related to "Runes transactions" or "Bitcoin Runes".
Pay attention to the following data:
Proportion of Runes transactions in total Bitcoin transactions
Daily change trend of the number of Rune transactions
Comparison with Ordinals and regular BTC transfers
If smart money addresses collectively buy a certain Rune but the overall on-chain Rune transaction volume is declining, be cautious about the validity of that signal.
When is this step done?: You have built a dual decision framework of smart money addresses + on-chain macro data.
How to confirm you have correctly set up the monitoring?
If you can see the latest activity of watched addresses in the Watchlist of RuneAlpha or GeniiData, the setup is successful. It is recommended to first test the whole process with 1–2 addresses to verify that the tools can retrieve data properly, and then add more target addresses in batches. Afterwards, regularly (e.g., daily) check the Watchlist updates and make trading decisions in conjunction with Rune price trends.
