Prediction Market Limit Order Stuck for a Long Time: Is It a Price or Depth Problem?

You placed a limit order, the price touched your level, but it just didn't fill. This happens more often than you might think on Polymarket — and the problem is usually not the price, but the "fill" itself.

Core takeaway: Price reached ≠ Order filled

A fill requires three conditions to be met at the same time: your bid ≥ the counterparty's ask, enough counterparty volume, and successful on-chain settlement after matching. The last part is often overlooked, but it is exactly where Polymarket is most unstable.

Polymarket uses a hybrid model with off-chain matching and on-chain settlement: orders are matched off-chain, which is very fast, but the final step must go back to the Polygon chain to complete the fund transfer. There is a time gap in between — an off-chain display of a fill does not mean the on-chain settlement actually happened.

If your order is not filling, troubleshoot from two directions

Direction 1: Price and depth issues (most common)

  • [What to do]: Check whether your order price is currently the "best ask" or "best bid" in the order book.

  • [How to do it]: Open the order book for that market and look at best ask (lowest sell price) and best bid (highest buy price). If your buy price is below the best ask, your order will sit behind in the queue. How long you wait depends on how many orders are ahead of you and whether anyone is willing to sell to you at a lower price.

  • [Completion standard]: You can confirm that your quote is currently the highest bid or lowest ask in the order book.

If the price is fine, next look at depth. If your buy quantity is larger than the total resting orders at that price level, the system will not "split your order into multiple smaller fills" — a FOK (Fill or Kill) type order will simply fail. This is especially common in illiquid markets, and it happens a lot in short-term markets such as crypto price predictions.

Direction 2: On-chain settlement failure ("ghost fill")

  • [What to do]: Check whether the order status shows "filled" but the result never actually took effect.

  • [How to do it]: Open "Open Orders" or "Order History" and check the status.

    • Case A: It shows "matched" or "filled", but there is no final position or balance change.

      • This may be a ghost fill — off-chain matching succeeded, but on-chain settlement failed. Polymarket's V2 version fixed some of these issues, but the time gap between off-chain matching and on-chain settlement makes this problem impossible to fully eliminate.

      • [What to do]: Wait for the order to expire naturally (the system will release the funds), or place a new order. There is no actionable remedy on your side in this situation.

    • Case B: It shows "live" or "open".

      • It simply has not filled yet. Go back to Direction 1 and continue troubleshooting.

Risk reminder: Placing a limit order in an illiquid market may result in no activity for days. Moreover, once the event approaches settlement and prices swing sharply, your resting order may be blown through instantly — not because the price did not reach your level, but because there was no counterparty volume at that price to absorb your size. Check the order book depth before placing an order. If the volume at the best ask is far smaller than the amount you want to buy, either raise your price or reduce your quantity.

Troubleshooting checklist

  1. Price check: Is your quote currently the best price in the order book?

  2. Depth check: Is there enough counterparty volume at that price level to fill your order?

  3. Order type check: If you used FOK, insufficient counterparty volume will cause an immediate failure.

  4. Status check: Does the order show "matched" but did not actually fill? If so, it may be a ghost fill. Wait for the system to process it.
