Settlement Result Is Clearly Wrong: How to Take Part in the 2-Hour Challenge Window

"A market result is obviously locked in, but the settlement proposal judged it wrong. The two-hour window is about to close. What can you do?" In this situation, your only real chance to fix it is to step in and start a dispute yourself.

Core point: Dispute is the only chance to correct it, but you must act fast

When a Polymarket market enters the settlement process, there is a 2-hour challenge window. If someone submits a settlement proposal that is clearly wrong, you can raise a dispute during that window. You need to stake 750 USDC as a bond.

If your challenge succeeds, you can earn a 250 USDC reward. More importantly, you correct the wrong settlement result. But once the window closes, no matter how unreasonable the result is, it must be accepted.

Step 1: First check the market status — is it still inside the "2-hour window"?

[What to do]: Confirm whether you are still eligible to start a dispute. This is the most important step.

[How to do it]:

  1. Open your Polymarket Portfolio or the market page and find that position.

  2. Check the market status.

  • Case A: Status shows "Proposed"

    • This is the only status where you can start a dispute. It means someone submitted a settlement proposal within 2 hours, and the timer is counting down.

    • [How to do it]: Move to the next step immediately. You only have the 2-hour window from the moment the proposal was submitted.

  • Case B: Status shows "Resolved"

    • It means no one challenged during the 2-hour window, and the market has already been settled automatically. The result cannot be changed, and there is no appeal opportunity.

  • Case C: Status shows "Disputed"

    • It means someone has already started a dispute, and it has entered the UMA arbitration process. You do not need to start another one, but you can follow the later voting.

[Completion standard]: Confirm the status is "Proposed" and the window is still open.

Step 2: Check the dispute threshold — are you willing to stake 750 USDC?

[What to do]: Starting a dispute has a cost. Confirm whether you can accept having this amount locked.

[How to do it]:

  • Prepare 750 USDC as a bond.

  • This money will be locked after you start the dispute until the arbitration ends.

  • If your challenge succeeds, you get the bond back and earn an extra 250 USDC reward.

  • If your challenge fails, the bond goes to the proposal side.

Risk note: 750 USDC is a hard threshold. It is not designed only to filter malicious disputes, but it also directly prevents small users from taking part in correction. If you think this cost is too high, you can only passively accept the result.

Step 3: How to start a dispute

[What to do]: Press the "Dispute" button during the window.

[How to do it]:

  1. Go to the settlement page of that market, usually in "History" or the market detail page.

  2. Click the "Dispute" button.

  3. The system will ask you to stake 750 USDC. Confirm and submit.

  4. After submission, the market status will change to "Disputed" and enter the UMA arbitration process.

[Completion standard]: The status changes to "Disputed", your 750 USDC is locked, and the page shows "Dispute submitted".

Step 4: What can you do after submitting a dispute?

After submitting a dispute, it enters the formal UMA arbitration process, which includes these stages:

StageDurationWhat you should do
Debate PeriodUp to 48 hoursSubmit evidence, rule interpretations, news links and other materials in the UMA Discord
Voting Period48 hours, two phasesWait for UMA token holders to vote. It requires at least 5 million UMA participating and the winner needs at least 65% of votes
Automatic settlementAfter voting endsThe result is final. Funds are distributed according to the vote result. No appeal is possible

What ordinary position holders can do:

  • You are not a voter. Only UMA token holders vote, so you cannot directly participate in voting.

  • You can speak up in the UMA Discord discussion area and submit what you believe is the correct evidence to influence voters.

  • Do not dump your shares at a low price. If the dispute result ends up favoring you, selling cheaply during the window means you lose for no reason.

What you cannot do:

  • Interfere with the vote result.

  • Ask the platform to "overturn" the vote result. Once the UMA ruling is complete, the result is final and there is no remedy.

Limits of the dispute window: know these risks before deciding whether to take part

Risk 1: Rulings are not based on "facts" but on "verifiable evidence"

The most typical case: when Strategy sold BTC, the company really did sell 32 BTC before May 31, but the SEC filing was submitted on June 1. The proposer ruled "No" on the grounds that there was no public confirmation of the sale within the window. No one challenged during the dispute window, so it was settled directly. Facts are not the same as verifiable evidence. This is the core cognitive gap in Polymarket settlement.

Risk 2: A dispute may be dragged back and forth

In the "Zelensky wearing a suit" market, because the definition of "suit" was vague, five rounds of disputes were started one after another, and funds were locked for 8.5 days. If you submit a dispute, it may not open one quick round of correction but a long battle.

Risk 3: Voting power is concentrated, and the result may not follow what most people think

The top ten UMA wallet addresses hold more than half of the voting power, and about 60% of voters can be matched to Polymarket trading accounts. The arbiters themselves may be interested parties. This is a design issue at the bottom of the system, not an isolated case.

FAQ

Q: How is the 2-hour window calculated? Answer: It starts from the moment someone submits a settlement proposal. It is strictly 2 hours. You can see the countdown on the market page. After the window passes, the status becomes "Resolved" and you can no longer start a dispute.

Q: If the market status is "Open" but the result is already known, can I start a dispute? Answer: No. Disputes only apply to the "Proposed" status. If no one has submitted a proposal yet, you can submit one yourself and state the correct result, or wait for someone else to submit it and then decide whether to dispute.

Q: How long will my position be locked after submitting a dispute? Answer: From dispute submission to final settlement, it usually finishes within a week. This includes the 2-hour challenge period, up to 48 hours of debate, and 48 hours of voting.

Q: If I win the dispute, can I get all my money back? Answer: The dispute only decides whether the result is right or wrong. It does not change the odds. If the vote confirms that the side you bet on was correct, your shares are redeemed 1:1 for USDC. The bond and the reward of 250 USDC will also be returned.
