That's not how it works. Expired does not mean unlocked. Staking expiry only means you are now allowed to start the unlocking process. It does not mean the process is already finished. Many people get stuck here, assuming the system will handle everything automatically, only to find days later that their coins are still locked.

Step 1: Check your staking status - is it "Expired" or "Unlocked"?

[What to do]: On the Babylon staking dashboard, check exactly what status your stake shows.

[How to do it]: Open the Babylon Staking Dashboard, connect your wallet, and find your staking record in the "Staking History" list.

  • Case A (Status shows "EXPIRED"): Your staking term has ended, but it is still not unlocked. This is normal. You need to manually start the unbonding process.

  • Case B (Status shows "Active"): It has not expired yet. Wait.

  • Case C (Status shows "Unbonding" or "Withdrawable"): You have already started the unbonding process. You are either in the waiting period or ready to withdraw.

[Completion standard]: Confirm that your stake has actually entered the EXPIRED state. Only then do the next steps apply.

Step 2: Start unbonding - this step must be done manually

[What to do]: On the dashboard, actively click the unbond button to start the unlock request.

[How to do it]: Find your staking record in Staking History and click the Unbond button. After that, there are two stages:

  1. Wait for the unbonding period: Babylon's official documentation clearly states that the BTC staking unbonding period is 301 Bitcoin blocks, about 2 days. This waiting period is not a bug. It is a security design by the protocol to give the community enough time to respond to potential attacks.

  2. Withdraw manually: After the waiting period ends, return to the dashboard. You will see a Withdraw button. Click it and confirm the transaction in your wallet. Only then will your BTC actually be transferred back to your address.

Note: This process applies to Phase 2 (Babylon Genesis) staking. If your stake is still in the pending migration list, the steps may be slightly different.

[Completion standard]: You see the Unbond button and successfully start the unbonding request.

Common reason for failure: Most people get stuck because they think expiry means automatic unlocking. BTC staking unbonding is not automatic. You need to actively take two steps: first Unbond, wait 2 days, then Withdraw.

Step 3: Troubleshoot Unbond failures - check for technical issues

If you get an error when clicking Unbond, check the following possibilities:

  • Wallet compatibility issues: Check whether your wallet is still on Babylon's official supported list. Some wallets, such as Ledger and Xverse, do not support the full process.

  • Browser cache or extension conflicts: Babylon officially recommends updating your wallet extension, disabling unrelated browser extensions, and clearing your cache before trying again.

  • Network congestion or RPC endpoint failure: If some data interface on the dashboard, such as BTC block height or fee query, is unavailable, the operation may not work.

  • Double staking or hash conflict: In early versions, malicious users could use someone else's staking hash to occupy the unbonding channel, causing your Unbond request to fail. If you participated early, this could be the reason.

Risk reminder: The unbonding process for BABY tokens is separate from BTC. BABY unbonding takes about 300 Bitcoin blocks, roughly 50 hours, and the exit logic for BABY staking depends on Babylon mainnet "Epoch" processing, which is every 360 blocks, about 1 hour. Make sure you are operating on BTC staking, not BABY staking.

FAQ

Q: Is the BTC staking unbonding period 2 days or 7 days? A: It depends on the phase. Phase 1 was 7 days. Phase 2, Babylon Genesis, is 301 Bitcoin blocks, about 2 days. If you see 7 days mentioned somewhere, it may be a tutorial for an earlier phase.

Q: Can I cancel the unbonding during the waiting period? A: Once you start unbonding and sign the transaction on-chain, it cannot be cancelled. You must wait for the 2-day waiting period to end and then withdraw.

Q: If I never click Withdraw, will my BTC stay in the protocol forever? A: Yes. After the waiting period ends, if you do not manually click Withdraw, your BTC will not be automatically returned. It will be in a "withdrawable" state, but it will not move back by itself.

Next step

Open your Babylon dashboard now. If your staking status is EXPIRED, click the Unbond button immediately and complete the first step. Then remember: come back in 2 days and click Withdraw. Expiry does not mean unlocked. Taking action yourself is the key.
