Page Keeps Spinning After Scanning QR Code: Will Closing the Page Lose the Connection Request?

I have seen many people make a costly mistake here: after scanning the QR code, the page keeps spinning. They get impatient and close the page, only to find that the wallet has actually already connected, but they can no longer get back to that session.

The answer is: not necessarily lost, but you will end up in a more troublesome situation - the wallet session has already been established, but the DApp page has no entry point for you to restore it. At this point, you can only go to the wallet to manually disconnect and scan again, which means you waited for nothing.

Why Closing the Page Does Not Equal Canceling the Request

The pairing process of WalletConnect is independent of the DApp page. When you scan the QR code, you are essentially establishing a pairing between your mobile wallet and the WalletConnect relay server. This pairing will remain in a "waiting for session proposal" state in the wallet until it receives a session request from the DApp, or until it automatically expires after a 5-minute timeout.

When you close the DApp page, the DApp stops sending session requests, but the wallet is still in the "waiting" state. It does not know that you closed the page. This state will last until the 5-minute pairing expires, or until you manually clear it in the wallet.

If the Page Is Already Closed, Do Not Rush to Reopen It

Situation A: You see a "connection request" or "pending" prompt in the wallet

If you close the page directly at this point, the wallet is still waiting. If you directly reopen the page and scan again, the wallet will think you are using the same pairing ID to initiate a second connection and will report an error saying "duplicate pairing is not allowed."

[What to do]: Completely clear this stuck session [How to do it]: Open the wallet app, go to Settings → find WalletConnect or the connected sites list, and delete the stuck DApp entry. Then go back to the browser, reopen the DApp page, refresh the QR code, and scan again. [Completion standard]: The DApp entry no longer appears in the wallet's connected sites list

Situation B: Nothing pops up in the wallet, and the phone just silently spins after scanning

This situation means the pairing request was never initiated. Once the DApp page is closed, the request chain is directly broken.

[What to do]: Go through the complete process again [How to do it]: Go back to the DApp page (you may need to refresh once), click "Connect Wallet" to generate a new QR code, and when scanning, make sure the mobile wallet is in the foreground and unlocked. After scanning, watch whether the wallet pops up a confirmation window. According to WalletConnect best practices, the wallet should show a loading indicator immediately after scanning, and then pop up a confirmation dialog.

[Completion standard]: The wallet pops up a connection confirmation window showing the DApp name and the requested permissions

What to Do If It Spins for More Than 10 Seconds

AlphaWallet developers have tested that a successful WalletConnect connection usually takes only 2-3 seconds. If it is still spinning beyond that time, it is most likely stuck. Do not just wait. Refresh the QR code directly.

The correct action here is: on the DApp page, click "Refresh QR code" to generate a new code (not refreshing the entire browser page), and then scan again. The old code becomes invalid, and only the new code can establish a new pairing.

High-risk warning: There is a situation where the wallet does not pop up a window, but the connection has actually been established in the background, and the DApp just did not receive the callback. If you blindly close the page and open a new code at this point, it will cause one address to have two sessions on the same DApp. The next time you initiate a transaction, the wallet may ask you to choose between two sessions. If you choose the wrong one, the gas fee will still be deducted but the transaction status will not update.

When It Is Safe to Close the Page

  • You have already clicked "Reject" or "Cancel" in the wallet - the connection request has been actively terminated, so closing the page is fine.
  • The QR code already shows "Expired" - the pairing time is up and the session has automatically become invalid.
  • The DApp page shows "Connection timed out" or "Request expired" - the DApp side has given up on this request and the session has been marked as invalid.

Verification method: After scanning again, the mobile wallet should pop up a connection confirmation window. After clicking confirm, the DApp page should show your wallet address in the top right corner. If there is no response within 3 seconds, do as mentioned above - refresh the QR code and try again, rather than closing the page.
