If you don't hold a position at the settlement time, no fee is charged; if you do hold one, the fee applies according to the rules. If you happened to have no position at the exact moment the funding fee countdown ended, naturally there will be no charge.

1. First, Understand the Only Condition for Funding Fee Deduction
Binance perpetual futures funding fees only depend on whether you hold a position at the settlement time, and have nothing to do with open orders.
Settlement occurs at 00:00, 08:00, and 16:00 (UTC), every 8 hours. Only users who hold a position in any direction at the settlement moment need to pay or receive funding fees.
If you close all your positions before the countdown ends, even if you just had a position, you will not be charged. Conversely, if you hold even a $1 position at settlement, you will pay or receive fees based on "position value × funding rate".
2. Which Positions May Be "Excluded" and Not Charged
The following situations do not incur funding fees:
Positions already closed at settlement: Even if closed a second before, it doesn't count.
Only placed limit orders that haven't been filled: Open orders do not generate funding fees.
Position margin is zero or has been liquidated: After liquidation the position disappears, no further funding fee is charged (but other fees may apply).
3. Countdown Ended Without a Fee? Check These Points First
Step 1: Confirm whether you actually held a position at that time
What to do: Around the settlement time, check your futures positions list.
How to do it: If you closed before settlement, there will be no deduction record. Binance will not charge funding fees for already closed positions.
What counts as done: You have confirmed your position status at the settlement moment.
Step 2: Confirm whether the contract had a normal funding round this period
What to do: Some contracts may adjust the funding interval under extreme market conditions, or the settlement time may deviate by up to 15 seconds.
How to do it: Check Binance Futures' "real-time funding rate" page to confirm if the latest funding round for that contract completed normally. If the rate was adjusted to 0% for that round, no fees are generated.
What counts as done: You have confirmed the settlement status and rate value for that contract's round.
Step 3: Check the funding rate history
What to do: On the Binance Futures page, find "Funding Rate History" and check the specific rate for the relevant round according to your holding time.
How to do it: If the rate was 0%, or your position value was so small that the funding fee amount was below the minimum deductible unit, the fee might not appear as a deduction.
What counts as done: You have confirmed the actual rate for that round and the amount you were due to pay or receive.
Prerequisite: You held a Binance perpetual futures position and noticed that no funding fee was deducted for a particular funding round.

Common Causes
"Closing a position a few seconds before settlement, thinking you can catch the last moment": The actual funding fee collection has a deviation of up to 15 seconds. If you open a position at 08:00:05, you may still be charged; conversely, if you close at 07:59:55, you might still be billed due to processing delays. The countdown hitting zero does not mean settlement is complete.
Risk Reminder: If your available balance is insufficient to pay the funding fee, the system will deduct it from the position margin, affecting your liquidation price. Even if you think "no fee was deducted," the margin may have already been subtracted without you noticing.
After performing the above checks, how can you know why you weren't charged this time?
Go to the "funding rate history" in Binance Futures and check the record for the round when you held a position. If it shows 0%, the rate was zero. If the rate was non-zero but you weren't charged, then you didn't hold a position at settlement. If you held a position at settlement, the rate wasn't zero, and you truly weren't charged, take a screenshot of your position and funding records and contact Binance customer support for verification.
