Adding Funds to an OKX Grid Bot: Do Parameters Change?

If you add funds to a running grid bot, the core parameters – price range, number of grids – won't change. What changes is the order amount for each grid. The extra money is redistributed across the same grid levels in proportion, increasing the buy and sell size at every price level.

Step 1: Understand What Adding Funds Actually Changes

What to do: Know which parameters stay fixed and which get adjusted.

How to do it: OKX strategy documents split parameters into two groups: structure parameters – upper and lower price limits, number of grids, grid mode (arithmetic or geometric) – and investment parameters – the amount of money invested. Adding funds only affects the investment side.

Example: you run a BTC/USDT spot grid with a price range of 50,000–60,000, 10 grids, and 1,000 USDT invested. The system sets each grid to buy/sell 0.0002 BTC. After you add 500 USDT, the grid price levels and number of grids stay exactly the same; only the order size per grid goes up from 0.0002 BTC to 0.0003 BTC.

Success criteria: You can clearly explain that adding money changes the order size at each price level, not where the price levels sit.

Common mistake: Some people think adding funds will shift the whole grid up or down with the market. Grid buy and sell levels are locked when you create the strategy – adding funds does not move them.

Step 2: How to Add Funds to Different Grid Types

What to do: Find the right "add funds" entry based on whether you run a spot grid or a contract grid.

How to do it:

  • Spot Grid: Go to [Trade] → [Strategies] → [Spot Grid], tap [Details] on your strategy. On the strategy details page, look for [Adjust Parameters] or [Add Investment]. Enter the amount you want to add; the system will show the updated order size per grid. Confirm to apply.

  • Contract Grid: Go to [Trade] → [Strategies] → [Contract Grid], find your strategy and open its details. For contract grids you add margin. The path is similar: tap the "+" next to the margin field, choose where to transfer from (e.g., your contract account), and enter the amount.

Success criteria: The "Total Investment" or "Margin Balance" on the strategy details page has increased, and the order size per grid has updated in proportion.

High risk: After you edit parameters of a spot grid, the trailing up/down feature is automatically disabled and cannot be turned back on individually. Also, if the quote asset (like USDT) is not enough to meet the new minimum trade requirements, the system will ask you to top up the quote asset first – you cannot add only the base asset. Make sure you have enough USDT in your account before adding funds.

Step 3: Decide If Adding Funds Is the Right Move Now

Before you add money, go through these three questions:

  1. Is the price still inside the grid range? If BTC has already broken above your upper limit or fallen below your lower limit, the grid bot has likely stopped triggering trades. Adding money now won't restart it; you're just putting funds into a system that's idling. The right approach is to stop the old strategy, set a new price range based on current market conditions, and create a fresh grid.

  2. How frequent are the trades? If the grid hasn't triggered many trades, the market may be quiet or your range might be too wide. Adding funds won't improve trading frequency – consider narrowing the range or reducing the number of grids instead.

  3. Is the contract grid margin ratio still safe? If a contract grid is close to liquidation due to large unrealised losses, the system will stop the strategy. In this case, adding margin is an effective way to keep it running longer – but only if you still believe the price will swing within your range.

Verification after adding funds: Go to the strategy details page and check the "order size per grid". It should have increased in line with the new total investment. If the price has already moved outside your grid range, do not add more money – terminate the strategy, reset your range, and start over.
