Why OKX Auto-Borrowing Doesn't Trigger Automatic Repayment

When you use auto-borrow and the loan doesn't get repaid automatically, it's usually not a system glitch – the repayment trigger works differently than you might expect. "Auto-borrow" does not mean a fully automated closed-loop process. In most modes, auto-repayment only happens when a specific action (closing a position) occurs, or if you're borrowing for spot margin, the system simply won't repay for you.

Below are the specific rules for OKX auto-borrowing and repayment, along with what you need to do.

Prerequisites

  1. You used the "Auto-borrow" feature when placing an order (buy or sell) in your OKX trading account.

  2. After the order was filled, a liability was created and you expected the system to repay it automatically.

  3. You can access the Assets or Positions page to check your liability balance.

Step 1: Identify Which Account Mode You Are Using

Automatic repayment logic varies entirely by account mode. Start by identifying your mode.

Case A: Isolated Margin Mode or Spot Cross Margin Mode ("One-Click Borrow Isolated Margin")

This is a spot trading feature that supports both "Auto-borrow" and "Auto-repay" modes:

  • Auto-borrow mode: When an order is filled, the system automatically borrows the asset to complete the trade. No interest accrues if the order is not filled, but the borrowing limit is reserved.

  • Auto-repay mode: When an order is filled, if the system detects a liability, it will use the purchased asset directly to repay the debt.

If your isolated margin position is using "Auto-borrow" mode instead of "Auto-repay" mode, the filled order creates a liability, but the system will not automatically repay – it only helps you borrow, it does not repay for you.

Case B: Futures Mode (Cross or Isolated)

In futures mode, if a borrow occurs, automatic repayment of the coin and interest only happens when you close the position. As long as the position remains open, the liability stays and no auto-repayment is triggered.

Case C: Unified Account (Multi-currency Margin Mode)

Unified accounts support auto-borrowing but not manual borrowing. You borrow automatically when opening a position, and repay automatically when closing it. In multi-currency margin mode, any liability shown under assets after closing still requires you to buy the coin in spot trading to fully clear it.

Completion criteria: Determine whether you are operating in "Isolated Margin + Auto-borrow mode", "Futures mode", or "Unified Account mode". The repayment method is completely different in each case.

Step 2: If Reality Differs from Expectations, Repay Manually

If the system doesn't auto-repay as you expected, the liability will remain in your account and accrue interest hourly. Here's how to repay manually:

Spot Margin (Isolated/Cross):

  1. Go to AssetsMargin Account or Unified Account.

  2. Find the liability coin and click the "Repay" button.

  3. Enter the amount to repay. After confirming, the system will deduct the coin from your available balance.

Futures Mode:

  • To trigger automatic repayment, close the corresponding position. The system will automatically repay the coin and interest at the same time.

Completion criteria: The liability balance drops to zero and no further interest accrues.

Step 3: Check Whether "Forced Repayment" Has Triggered a Passive Repayment

What looks like "no auto-repayment" might actually be a case where the system already repaid for you without you knowing.

OKX has two forced repayment mechanisms, both triggered by platform risk control and not controllable by the user:

Mechanism 1: Platform Borrowing Cap Trigger

  • When the total platform borrowing for a particular coin exceeds OKX's dynamic limit, the system triggers a forced repayment. This automatically sells other assets in your account to buy the liability coin and repay the debt.

Mechanism 2: User Negative Balance Trigger (Multi-currency / Portfolio Margin Mode Only)

  • When auto-borrowing is turned off and an unrealized loss on a futures position causes a coin balance to go negative, the system will sell assets to cover the negative balance.

Both forced repayments are initiated by the system; you cannot trigger them yourself. If assets in your account were automatically sold and swapped for other coins, it means a platform-level forced repayment occurred, not that the expected "auto-repayment" failed to happen.

Completion criteria: Check your Borrow Order History for any records of "Forced Swap" or "Auto Swap". If present, it means the system has already forced repayment.

Common Reason for Failure

Biggest misconception: Treating "Auto-borrow" as "fully automatic closed-loop repayment"

Many users think that enabling "Auto-borrow" initiates a seamless "borrow → trade → repay" process. In reality, under most modes, "Auto-borrow" only handles the "borrow" step. Repayment either requires you to do it manually (spot margin auto-borrow mode), is triggered only when you close a position (futures mode), or depends on whether the platform's risk control triggers forced repayment.

Risk Reminders

  • Interest accrues hourly: As long as a liability exists, interest keeps accumulating. Don't leave it unattended thinking "the system will repay it automatically."

  • Platform forced repayment can happen without your knowledge: When total platform borrowing exceeds the limit, OKX may directly sell assets in your account to repay the loan, and this may occur without prior notice. To avoid being caught off guard, it's advisable to monitor the market liquidity of your held coins and avoid forced swaps during supply shortages.

  • Asset selection for liquidation follows a priority order: During forced repayment, the system prioritizes selling the asset with the highest haircut rate (i.e., the smallest risk buffer). Among assets with the same haircut rate, it sells the more liquid one first.

How to Confirm Liabilities Are Settled

Go to the Assets page and check the "Liabilities" field for the respective coin. If it shows 0, the loan is fully repaid. If a balance remains, the outstanding portion is still accruing interest. Choose the appropriate repayment method based on your account mode – either repay manually or close the position to trigger auto-repayment.
